geography

The city is located in the northwest of the Lena Angara Plateau , about 1200 km north of the Oblast capital Irkutsk, a few kilometers east of the Ilim , a right tributary of the Angara .

The city zheleznogorsk-ilimsky is the administrative center of the Rajons Nischneilimski (, Low-Ilim-Rajon ').

Zheleznogorsk-Ilimski is located on the Baikal-Amur main line ( Korschunicha-Angarskaya station ; 555 km from Taishet ) and the Bratsk - Ust-Kut highway .

history

In place of a settlement that may have existed since the 17th century, the Korschunicha miners' settlement was built from 1948 in connection with the start of the mining of the iron ore deposit on Mount Schelesnaja ( Eisenberg ) . It was named after the ore prospector Schestak Korschunow, who discovered the "Eisenberg" in the 17th century, like the small river that flows through the town and flows into the Ilim.

In the 1950s, with the construction and completion of the western section Taischet - Ust-Kut ( Lena ) of the later Baikal-Amur mainline and the start of large-scale iron mining, the place was given the status of urban-type settlement under the name Schelesnogorsk ("iron mining town") .

In 1965, when the ore enrichment factory was completed, the town received its town charter under its current name. The addition Ilimski , derived from the river name Ilim, serves to distinguish it from the city of Zhelesnogorsk in the Kursk Oblast (or today from Zelesnogorsk in the Krasnoyarsk region , which was only given this name later).

There is a partnership with the Japanese city of Sakata .
