Mikhail Yangel ( Russian Михаил Кузьмич Янгель ; born October 25 . Jul / 7. November  1911 greg. In Syrjanowa in Irkutsk Governorate , † 25 October 1971 in Moscow ) was a Soviet rocket engineer.

His career began as an aircraft engineer after graduating from the Moscow Aviation Institute in 1937 . Later he dealt with ballistic missiles, where he initially worked on the control systems of the missiles.

As a companion of Sergei Korolev , he set up a rocket propulsion center in the Ukraine , which in 1954 laid the basis for his OKB-586 design department. At the beginning Jangels system of mass production and further development of served intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs). His department developed the R-12 and R-16 , whose launch vehicle offshoots became known as Kosmos and Zyklon .

Jangel narrowly got away with his life in the Nedelin disaster in 1960 because he was in a smoking area further away at the time of the explosion. His OKB played a leading role in the development of the Soviet lunar module LK as part of the Soviet manned lunar program .

He died shortly before his 60th birthday of his fifth heart attack and was buried in the cemetery of the Novodevichy Monastery .

Appreciations

For his outstanding achievements, Jangel was awarded the Lenin Prize in 1960 and the State Prize in 1967. He was also awarded four orders of Lenin , the Order of the October Revolution and numerous medals; he was a two-time hero of socialist labor .
