Sakata ( Japanese 酒 田 市 , -shi ) is a coastal city in Yamagata Prefecture in northwestern Honshū , the main island of Japan .
geography
Sakata is south of Akita and north of Tsuruoka on the Sea of Japan . The city is located at the mouth of the Mogami River into the Sea of Japan .
history
When the Japanese community was reorganized, Sakata was classified as a small town ( machi ) in Akumi County . On April 1, 1933, the city was appointed a district-free city ( shi ).
