Shirataka ( Japanese 白鷹 町 , - machi ) is a city in Nishiokitama County in the Japanese prefecture of Yamagata .
geography
The Mogami flows through the community from south to north . Significant elevations are the 1,237 m high Hayama ( 葉 山 ) on the border with Nagai and Asahi , and the 994 m high Shirataka-yama ( 白鷹 山 ) volcano on the border with Nan'yō and Yamanobe .
history
When modern Japanese community services were introduced on April 1, 1889, Nishiokitama et al. a. the village communities ( mura ) Arato ( 荒 砥 村 , -mura ), Shirataka ( 白鷹 村 , -mura ), Higashine ( 東 根 村 , -mura ), Ayukai ( 鮎 貝 村 , -mura ) and Koguwa ( 蚕桑 村 , -mura ). On December 3, 1890, Arato was elevated to a small town ( machi ). On January 1, 1892, the village Jūō ( 十 王村 , -mura ) was formed from areas of Shirataka . On October 1, 1954, all six parishes were merged to form today's Shirataka, with what was then Arato forming the center. On October 10, 1955, the district Haryū ( 針 生 ) of Asahi in the neighboring district of Nishimurayama of the community Shirataka was struck.

The main highways in Shirataka are the national roads 287 to Yonezawa or Higashine , and the national road 348 to Nagai or Yamagata .
Connection to the rail network is via the Yamagata Tetsudō Flower Nagai-sen with stops in Koguwa, Ayukai, Shikinosato and Arato. The line was operated by JR East , formerly Japanese National Railways , until 1988 .
Town twinning
Shirataka made friends with Tochio in Niigata Prefecture on May 11, 1972 . However, this city was incorporated into Nagaoka on January 1, 2006 and the friendship between the cities was dissolved.
education
There are six urban elementary schools in Shirataka ( 白鷹 町 立 X 小学校 , Shirataka-chōritsu X shōgakkō ): Koguwa, Ayukai, Arato, Takayama ( 鷹山 ), Nakayama ( 中山 ) and Higashine, the urban middle schools in the east ( 白鷹 町 立 東 a- , Shiratak chōritsu Higashi chūgakkō ) and West ( 白鷹 町 立 西 中 学校 , Shirataka-chōritsu Nishi chūgakkō ), as well as the Arato Prefectural High School ( 山形 県 立 荒 砥 高等学校 , Yamagata-kenritsu Arato kōtō gakkō ).
