The Mogami ( Japanese 最 上 川 , -gawa ) is a river in Yamagata Prefecture in Japan .
geography
It is 224 km long and has a water catchment area of 7040 km². Its mean flow rate at the mouth is 437 m³ / s.
It is considered to be one of the three fastest flowing rivers in Japan , along with the Fuji and the Kuma .
The river has its source in the southern Yamagata prefecture and flows northwards, at Shinjō it swings to the west and flows into the Sea of Japan at Sakata .
The river was once an important route to the Kansai region for local products such as safflower and rice .

Mogamigawa is also the name of the Yamagata Prefecture anthem written by Emperor Hirohito . The Imperial Japanese Navy had a cruiser called Mogami .
