The Kuma ( Japanese 球磨 川 , -gawa ) is a river in the Kumamoto prefecture on the island of Kyushu in Japan .

The Kuma is 115 km long and has a catchment area of ​​1880 km². Its mean discharge at the mouth is 103.98 m³ / s. Together with the Mogami and the Fuji, it is one of the three fastest rivers in Japan.

The Kuma is a popular sightseeing spot for tourists, annually about 70,000 people make a trip on the river. The Kuma is also fished (mainly in June), and it is used to irrigate nearby rice fields. It flows into the Yatsushiro Sea at Yatsushiro .
