Yatsushiro ( Japanese 八 代 市 , - shi ) is a major Japanese city in Kumamoto Prefecture on the island of Kyushu on the coast of the East China Sea .
geography
Yatsushiro is located south of Kumamoto and north of Kagoshima . Settlement is concentrated on the Yatsushiro Plain ( 八 代 平野 , Yatsushiro-heiya ) on the coast of the Yatsushiro Sea , while the hinterland is mountainous.
history
Yatsushiro is an old castle town . The castle Yatsushiro served during the time Edo as a secondary residence of Hosokawa .
The city was founded on September 1, 1940.
