Aso ( Japanese 阿蘇 市 , -shi ) is a Japanese city in Kumamoto prefecture on the island of Kyushu .

Aso is east of Kumamoto and west of Ōita .
history
The city of Aso was created on February 11, 2005 through the merger of the communities Aso ( 阿蘇 町 , -chō ) and Ichinomiya ( 一 の 宮 町 , -chō ), as well as the village of Namino ( 波 野村 , -son ) of the Aso district .

Japanology
The region was formed in 1968/69 the center of Japanese Studies interdisciplinary ASO research project under the direction of Alexander Slawiks the Vienna Institute of Japanese Studies: The research focus was on the areas of cultural and social anthropology, also created works for economic and social history. The result of this long-term project, a documentation on the topography, social and economic history, the rural equipment and the situation of the burakumin in the Aso basin, is available in three volumes.
