Hita ( Japanese 日 田 市 , -shi ) is a city in Ōita prefecture in Japan .
history
Hita is mentioned early in the chronicle of Bungo no Kuni Fudoki .
At the transition to the Middle Ages , the ruler Okura founded the Jonialanyoko shrine , which brought economic growth. In the former main shrine Ono Oimatsu Tenmansha you can still see the wooden structures from the Muromachi period in the 14th century.
The city has long been under the direct rule of the shoguns .
The old Hita received town charter on December 11, 1940.
On March 22, 2005, the old Hita joined the villages of Maetsue ( 前 津 江村 , - mura ), Nakatsue ( 中 津 江村 , -mura ) and Kamitsue ( 上 津 江村 , -mura ), and the towns of Ōyama ( 大 山 町 , - machi ) and Amagase ( 天 瀬 町 , -machi ) to form the new city of Hita.
Sights and festivals
- The Gion festival on the first weekend after July 20th originally served as protection from the plague, storm and flood as well as a prayer for peace and joy. The up to 10 m high ships that are carried during the procession are fascinating.
- The Mameda district ( 豆 田 町 ), which is characterized by traditional buildings and a castle, is worth seeing . On the third weekend in October there is a procession in the style of the Edo period (17th – 19th centuries).
- Amagase Onsen ( 天 ヶ 瀬 温泉 街 ) has been known for 1,300 years for its five public open-air baths in the river bed.
- The bamboo fish traps in the Takedashin district ( 竹田 新 町 ) are set up in the Mikuma River from August to November. The freshwater fish caught, pickled in salt and grilled, are a delicacy.

The extension of the municipality from east to west is 24.88 km, from north to south 48.63 km. The highest point is 1231 m.
