Beppu ( Japanese 別 府 市 , - shi ) is a big city and an important seaside resort in Japan .
geography
Beppu is located in Ōita prefecture on the island of Kyūshū on Beppu Bay . It is shaped by its over 3700 thermal springs and 168 public baths. Beppu has around 125,000 inhabitants, but around 12 million visitors come every year and can choose between different hot springs. Some springs are even used as natural egg boilers ( onsen tamago ).

- Jigoku Meguri. There are 8 different Jigoku in Beppu. They are very easy to get to by bus (from Beppu train station).
- Umi-Jigoku is a lake whose water temperature is enough to boil eggs. The water color is cobalt blue .
- Oniishibozu jigoku consists of several boiling hot mud holes. Volcanic gas emerges and creates bubbles reminiscent of the shaved heads of Buddhist monks, where the name comes from.

- Shiraike-Jigoku ( white pond hell ) got the name because of its water color. It is milky white, slightly bluish.
- Chinoike-Jigoku (often called blood hell) is a pond with red water with a temperature of 78 ° C.

- Tatsukai-Jigoku is a geyser that shoots a water fountain into the air about every 45 minutes.

- historical: Until 1961 there was a railway line with tram-like operation between Beppu and Ōita . After the accident on October 26, 1961 , the line was closed .
