Atami ( Japanese 熱 海市 , -shi , literally: "hot sea") is a city in the Japanese prefecture of Shizuoka .

history

The city in its current form was founded on April 10, 1937 , when the then city of Atami was merged with the village of Taga.

Attractions

The city is famous for its onsen (hot springs). Atami has been a resort town since the 8th century and is now part of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park .

Many pieces from the extensive art collection of eccentric multimillionaire and religious leader Mokichi Okada are housed in the MOA Art Museum.

Another attraction is the Atami- Ume Festival .

The temple of the Goddess of Mercy ( Koa Kannon ) is where the last remains of the seven Japanese war criminals who were sentenced to death before the International Military Tribunal for the Far East are kept. In the temple there is a statue of the goddess Koa Kannon, which was donated by General Matsui Iwane , who was responsible for the Nanking massacre , and which is made of Nanking soil. The temple is therefore increasingly becoming a tourist attraction for the Japanese.
