Fuji ( Japanese 富士 市 , -shi ) is a city in Shizuoka Prefecture in Japan at the foot of the mountain of the same name .

geography

In the south the city is bordered by the Suruga Bay on the Pacific coast and in the north the urban area extends to the foot of Mount Fuji . Mount Ashitaka forms the eastern border . The Fuji River flows through the western part of the city below Fujinomiya from north to south.

history

The city was formed in 1954 from the municipality Fuji ( 富士 町 , -chō ) and two villages (田 子 浦村 and 岩松 村), in 1966 it merged with the city of Yoshiwara and the municipality of Takaoka ( 鷹 岡 町 , -chō ), in 2001 it received the Status of a major city with special status ( 特例 市 , Tokureishi ).
