Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi ( Japanese 川口 能 活 Kawaguchi Yoshikatsu ; born August 15, 1975 , Fuji (Shizuoka) ), sometimes also called Yoshi Kawaguchi, is a Japanese former football player . He is a goalkeeper and was the captain of the Japanese national soccer team .

Career

He attended Shimizu Commercial High School and was a member of the football club there. After finishing high school, he joined the professional club of the Yokohama Marinos (now known as Yokohama F. Marinos ). He was called up to the Japanese national team and played in the Olympic Games in Atlanta .

After further appearances both for the club and for the country, he moved to the English club Portsmouth FC , but initially had problems getting used to it. He was used as a scapegoat on his debut when Portsmouth lost a home game against Leyton Orient 4-1.

He was soon drawn to the Danish league for FC Nordsjælland . Before the new season in the Japanese League began, Kawaguchi returned to his home country and signed a contract with defending champion Júbilo Iwata .

In September 2009, Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi broke his shin and was sidelined until May 2010 due to an injury. A big surprise was the immediate nomination for the 2010 soccer World Cup in South Africa after his comeback. Since it brings with it a great risk to use a player who could not collect more than half a year of practice at the World Cup, Kawaguchi was only number three behind Eiji Kawashima and Seigō Narazaki . Team boss Takeshi Okada justified the nomination with Kawaguchi's strong mentality that keeps the team together. This makes him enormously important for the team, even if he was just sitting on the bench.
