At the 2003 FIFA U-20 World Cup, he made a name for himself as a reflexive goalkeeper with good positional play, which made a significant contribution to his team's quarter-finals. This earned him the commitment to Nagoya Grampus . There he took up the competition with Seigō Narazaki for number one goal of the team. It was a fight that he would lose in the end, but he was able to successfully distinguish himself as a brave and ambitious challenger. Dissatisfied with his role as substitute goalkeeper for Narazaki, he finally moved to Kawasaki Frontale in 2007 , where he was regularly used in both the J.League and the AFC Champions League and soon became a national player in the Japanese national soccer team, for which he was on Debuted February 17, 2008 in the game against North Korea, established.
From national coach Takeshi Okada Kawashima was nominated next to Seigō Narazaki and Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi for the Soccer World Cup 2010 in South Africa . In the test match against England on May 30, 2010 in Graz , preference was given to him over the other two, much more experienced goalkeepers. In the game he distinguished himself with a saved penalty, shot by Frank Lampard . During the World Cup, he was finally used as a goalkeeper in all games in Japan.
After the 2010 World Cup, he moved to Europe for the Jupiler Pro League club Lierse SK .
In December 2015, he signed a contract with Dundee United .
On January 29, 2011 he won the Asian Football Championship as a regular goalkeeper with the Japanese national team . In the final against Australia (1-0 aet) he distinguished himself several times with strong saves that ensured victory for Japan .
