Abdul Majeed Waris or Waris Majeed (born September 19, 1991 in Tamale ) is a Ghanaian football player . The striker , who played for the Ghanaian national team for the first time in spring 2012 , made his debut for BK Häcken in Swedish professional football in 2010 and became the Allsvenskan top scorer there in 2012 . He has been under contract with FC Porto since 2018 and is currently on loan to Racing Strasbourg .

Career

society

Waris attended the Right to Dream Academy's soccer program . In September 2008 he moved to Hartpury College in England, a partner of the Right to Dream Academy . There he convinced both on the field and in the classroom. In 21 competitive appearances for the U-18 team of the college in his first season, he scored 36 goals. He was instrumental in winning the U-18 Cup competition of the English Schools' Football Association , as he scored a hat trick in both the semi-finals and the final . As a student, he won a National Award for his achievements and was named Sportsman of the Year at the school.

After Waris had taken part in the Gothia Cup youth tournament in Sweden with the college's youth team, the Gothia club BK Häcken signed him in October 2009 and agreed a four-year contract with the player from January 2010. This made him the first Right to Dream Academy graduate to sign a professional contract in a European professional league. Initially mainly active in the youth and reserve team, after his debut in March 2010 he played ten league games in the Allsvenskan in the 2010 season . Although he came to 16 first division games in the following season, he was for a long time in the shadow of John Chibuike and Mathias Ranégie . It was only after they left the club at the end of August that he played his only three season games in the starting line-up. He scored two goals, already in May he had scored his first league goal in Sweden as a substitute in a 3-1 win over AIK .

In February 2012 Waris received his first appointment to the Ghanaian national team when he and US professional Patrick Nyarko were invited to replace the injured Ayew brothers André and Jordan to play against Chile . In the subsequent 2012 season he kept his regular seat at his club. Together with René Makondele and mostly Björn Anklev , he formed the offensive series in the 4-3-3 system of coach Peter Gerhardsson . As a regular goalscorer, he quickly established himself at the top of the list of goalscorers, and he significantly expanded his top position with five goals in the 6-0 win over IFK Norrköping in mid-May. So he kept the club in the championship race with IF Elfsborg , AIK and Malmö FF . Ultimately, the club was runner-up behind IF Elfsborg, with 23 goals this season, they won the title of top scorer in the Swedish elite series.

Shortly after the end of the season, Russian club Spartak Moscow Waris signed. After his debut in the Premjer League in March 2013, however, he was mainly left with the role of supplementary player, who had to line up behind the offensive players Jura Mowsisjan , Lucas Barrios , Ari , Artyom Dzjuba and Emmanuel Emenike .

In January 2014, the French first division club Valenciennes FC brought Waris to Ligue 1 on loan until the summer . There he shone as a regular goalscorer, but despite his support - with nine goals this season he was the club's top scorer - the club missed relegation.

In the summer of 2014 he moved to the Turkish Süper Lig for Trabzonspor . Here he came to a total of 18 league games and five appearances in the Europa League .

He has been under contract with FC Lorient since 2015 and was loaned to FC Porto for six months during the 2017/18 winter break . Then the Portuguese committed the player, but immediately loaned him to FC Nantes . Another loan followed during the 2019/20 winter break, this time to Racing Strasbourg .

National team

In May 2014, national coach James Kwesi nominated Appiah Waris in the 26-player provisional squad of the Ghanaian national team for the 2014 World Cup . Although he made it into the final squad, he had his only final round appearance at the end of the group stage in the final 2-1 defeat against Portugal, which meant leaving the group bottom .
