Fotbollsallsvenskan 1989

The Fotbollsallsvenskan 1990 was the 66th season of the highest Swedish football league . Between April 4 and October 7, 1989, the twelve first division teams competed in the first and second leg in regular time, before the top four teams then played the Swedish championship in a final round by November 3. At the beginning of this season, the counting of points was changed: From then on there were three points instead of two for a win, and one point for a draw.

Season course

The IFK Göteborg team, supervised by Roger Gustafsson , finished in first place after the end of regular time and moved into the final in the final round, in which previous year's champions IFK Norrköping were dethroned on both sides. The team around Magnus Johansson , Magnus Johansson , Thomas Ravelli , Stefan Rehn and Peter Eriksson started the season with a 6-0 away defeat at the Norrköpinger Klub, but could not least because of the strength at home - IFK Göteborg was the only club in the league without a home defeat - outperform the competition during the season. Behind the two clubs, Örebro SK , Östers IF and Djurgårdens IF fought a three-way battle for the last two places in the finals for a long time . After Djurgårdens IF was in the race for a long time, especially because of the goal difference, the club from Stockholm only managed one win in the last five games, so that Örebro SK and Östers IF qualified for the finals.

In the lower part of the table, Hammarby IF and Örgryte IS were already determined ahead of time as two of the three relegated teams. While Hammarby IF missed relegation without an away win with only five wins of the season, Örgryte IS rose especially as the weakest team at home with only eight points earned on their own place. Before that, IK Brage and Halmstads BK fought a duel to stay up . On the fourth from last game day Halmstads BK jumped after a 3-0 home win over GAIS on the last non-relegation place, which the team was able to hold until the end of the season. Even a 4-2 win against AIK on the last day of the match didn't help IK Brage to stay in the league, as Halmstads BK also beat Hammarby IF with a 4-3 win.

Since the mode was changed for the following year , in which a spring series was introduced, after which the decisions were played out in league form in a championship or relegation round, the association decided to reduce the number of clubs to ten teams. Therefore, with GIF Sundsvall, there was only one second division promoted at the end of the year.
