The 1996 Fotbollsallsvenskan was the 72nd season of the top Swedish football league . After the start of the season, which was actually scheduled for April 7, could not take place due to the long winter, the Swedish football champions were played between April 21 and October 26, 1996.
The master of the previous year IFK Gothenburg defended the title and won with a total of 17 championship titles the club's third championship in a row. By Mats Jingblad supervised team to players like Andreas Andersson , Jesper Blomqvist , Magnus Erling Mark , Stefan Landberg , Mikael Nilsson and Teddy Lucic sat down with ten points ahead of runner-up Malmo FF through.
At the end of the table, Trelleborgs FF and promoted Umeå FC reached the relegation places . While Trelleborgs FF was able to prevail Umeå FC had to go into the second division. Djurgårdens IF and newly promoted IK Oddevold , who occupied the direct relegation places, accompanied the club from Västerbotten County to Division 1 .

The third and fourth from bottom of the Allsvenskan competed in the first and second leg against the respective runners-up of the individual Division 1 relays. The first division clubs Trelleborgs FF and Umeå FC met Hammarby IF and Ljungskile SK , respectively , with Trelleborgs FF relegation and Ljungskile SK the first division promotion.
