Maverick buying

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Maverick buying or wild shopping is a term from procurement management . In principle, the term is not used in a completely uniform way, but one speaks of maverick buying when departments buy materials or services on their own initiative without involving purchasing. Maverick buying is “procurement outside of standardized procurement channels”.

reasons

The reasons for such an uncontrolled procurement system include:

  • the ignorance of employees about existing procurement processes and framework agreements with suppliers
  • ignorance of the total cost of ownership , i.e. the total cost of the goods procured
  • Departmental egoism (because the procurement department only bears the procurement costs instead of the total costs)
  • Speed, flexibility and a lack of trust in the official supplier
  • Lack of availability of a certain variant of a material
  • Urgent need
  • Lack of business administration and process understanding among employees
  • A poor supplier base that ignores practical requirements
  • Conflicts of objectives between the purchasing department and the ordering departments

Consequences of Maverick Buying

As a result, a number of negative effects can occur:

  • Uncoordinated processes
  • Missing price comparisons
  • higher prices due to neglected or poorly managed negotiations and due to small numbers of items
  • Unused price advantages through framework agreements
  • Additional claims due to lack of knowledge in drafting the contract
  • Ignorance of the total expenditure
  • Missed target for framework agreements
  • Higher costs and lack of legal certainty in the event of complaints
  • Additional work at interfaces (incoming goods, financial accounting)
  • Damage to the external image of the purchasing company towards the supplier (through non-compliance with the processes)

In addition, advantages can arise from higher speed, greater flexibility, individual procurement and the use of special offers .
