The 1985 Fotbollsallsvenskan was the 61st season of the top Swedish football league . Between April 14 and October 6, 1985, the twelve top division teams competed in regular time in a round-trip leg, before the top four teams in cup mode, also in two-legged matches, until November 3 in a final round, the Swedish Championship played off.
The team from Malmö FF , supervised by Roy Hodgson , led after the end of regular time, especially due to the good away results - the club remained unbeaten away - in first place in the table. Kalmar FF followed closely behind , who missed the leap to first place on the final day of the match due to a draw against their direct rivals from Malmö. The decision about the two other finalists was made on the last day of the match based on the goal difference. While IFK Göteborg a 2-2 draw against IK Brage was enough to take fourth place with a goal difference of 14 goals, Örgryte IS (+15) drew through a 6-1 away win at Mjällby AIF on tied rivals AIK (+10 ) to third place, which was only granted a 1-0 win over IFK Norrköping and thus took the ungrateful fifth place. This also destroyed the theoretical chances of Hammarby IF , who was two points behind and a significantly worse goal difference, and the 3-2 away win at relegated Trelleborgs FF was meaningless.
In the final round, of all places, Malmö FF lost the away game at IFK Göteborg and after a home defeat had to write off winning the Von Rosens Cup in the semifinals . In the other semifinals, the Örgryte IS team, trained by Agne Simonsson , also prevailed with two wins against Kalmar FF. In the Gothenburg city duel in the final on October 31, ÖIS won the final first leg "away" with goals from two-time goalscorers Jan Hellström , Glenn Martindahl and Sören Börjesson 4: 2 and after a 2: 3 home game defeat on November 3, at Jan Gidebratt and again Jan Hellström scored the goals, winning the Swedish championship for the first time since 1913.
In the relegation battle there was a four-way battle between IK Brage, IFK Norrköping, Mjällby AIF and Trelleborgs FF for a long time. In the end, TFF was determined to be relegated prematurely, as the team only managed one away win. IK Brage was finally able to play a sufficiently secure cushion on the penultimate matchday with a 2-1 win against direct competitor Mjällby AIF, so that on the last matchday the two other teams, who met two of the candidates for the championship finals, a duel to keep up the league. Since both lost their respective games, Mjällby AIF had to pay tribute to the weakness at home, as only one win against IFK Göteborg at home in Strandvallen , and could no longer oust IFK Norrköping. This meant that the two previous year's climbers had to go straight down again.
The title of top scorer was shared between three players. Sören Börjesson from Örgryte IS , Peter Karlsson and Billy Lansdowne each from Kalmar FF topped the list of goalscorers with ten goals each at the end of regular time. With that they set a minus record, never before were fewer goals enough. Five years later, Kaj Eskelinen equalized this figure. In the final round, Jan Hellström from Örgryte IS and Stefan Pettersson from final opponent IFK Göteborg stood out with five goals each.
