Glenn Martindahl (born July 16, 1957 ) is a former Swedish football player . The offensive player, who came to two international appearances for the Swedish national team, won the Swedish championship title in 1985 with Örgryte IS .

Life

Martindahl grew up in Strömstad and began playing football for the local IFK Strömstad club . At the age of twenty he moved to Åtvidabergs FF , who had been promoted to Allsvenskan . In the following years he played with the two-time national champion against relegation to the second division. While he managed to stay in the league table with two points ahead of the relegation places occupied by AIK and IS Halmia , the team moved into the state cup competition at the side of players like Conny Torstensson , Thomas Wernersson and Stephan Kullberg with the club in the first division season 1979 Endgame one. The opponent IFK Göteborg , supervised by Sven-Göran Eriksson , competed with Ralf Edström , Tommy Holmgren , Glenn Hysén and Conny Karlsson , among others , was overwhelming and scored with a 6-1 win, in which the Göteborg club scored all of its goals in the first half had scored the title.

In the 1980 season , Martindahl distinguished himself as a regular goalscorer. While he was the most accurate player within the club last year with seven goals this season, he was among the top three players in the Allsvenskan scorers list with twelve goals this season behind Billy Ohlsson and Torbjörn Nilsson . After he continued to excel as a goal threat in the following season, national coach Lars Arnesson appointed him to the national team in the summer of 1981. When Karl-Gunnar Björklund scored 1-0 over the Finnish national team in a friendly on July 29th of that year, he made his debut as a substitute. He was then a substitute in the squad several times, but it took until October for his second international appearance. Again as a substitute he played against Saudi Arabia .

The 1982 season was disappointing for Martindahl. Only two goals this season meant on the one hand that he was no longer considered for the country selection, and on the other hand that the club was in acute danger of relegation. At the end of the season, the club had only 17 goals of the season, which was reflected in a point yield of ten plus points. As the bottom of the table, the team competed in the relegation games against Mjällby AIF and had to go into the second division after a 0-1 away defeat and a 1-1 draw in the second leg.

After relegation Martindahl left Åtvidabergs FF to continue to play in Sweden's top division. He joined the Gothenburg club Örgryte IS . At the side of Sören Börjesson and Peter Dahlqvist , he designed the offensive of the club, with which he failed as eighth of the 1983 season in the championship finals at Östers IF . If the team remained in ninth place in the next season, the final round was denied, in the 1985 season, third in the table, belonged to the now only four teams that played for the Von Rosens Cup for the national champions. At the side of Sören Börjesson, Sven Andersson , Gunnar Samuelsson and Jan Hellström , the team supervised by Agne Simonsson reached the final against local rivals IFK Göteborg. In the Gothenburg city duel on October 31st, Martinahl contributed to the 4-2 win in the final first leg, which meant winning the Swedish championship after the 2-2 defeat in the second leg, alongside the two-time goalscorer Jan Hellström and Sören Börjesson. Despite six goals this season, he could not confirm the success with the team and only finished ninth in the league. The team also failed early in the 1986/87 European Cup , losing to GDR representative BFC Dynamo in the first round . Therefore, after the end of the season Simonsson was replaced by Bob Houghton , who did not rely on the services of Martindahl. After only three appearances in the 1987 season , he then turned his back on the club and let his career fade out at Skövde AIK and Bollebygds IF .

After the end of his active career, Martindahl appeared as a coach at amateur clubs that played lower class. In 2005 Sveriges Radio signed him as an expert for the relegation games to the Superettan . After his mission was successful, he took on the task for a long time.

Martindahl, who is a full-time bank clerk, has three children. His son Karl Martindahl pursues a career as a singer and took part in the Swedish preliminary round for the Eurovision Song Contest .
