The Mjällby AIF is a Swedish football club from the city Mjällby in the province of Blekinge . The team played three seasons in the Allsvenskan and joined the Allsvenskan in the 2010 season . After two relegations in a row, the club entered third class in the 1st division Södra in 2016 . After two years of consolidation - the club was now on the brink of bankruptcy - MAIF rose back to the Superettan (2nd division) in 2018. Although the club was treated as a relegation candidate, the yellow-blacks marched through the second division and at the end of the season were sensational and for the first time in club history champions of the Superettan and rose after only one year in division two directly to the Allsvenskan, where they go on the hunt for points from 2020.

history

Years in the lower class (1939–1979)

Mjällby AIF was created in 1939 through the merger of the Listers IF and Hälleviks IF associations . Initially, the team played under-class and mainly oscillated between the third and fourth level.

After Mjällby AIF was relegated again to the fourth division in 1973, the team returned to the third division two years later. As the season winner of Division 3 Sydöstra Götaland ahead of Hässleholms IF and IFK Kristianstad , the team immediately qualified for the promotion round to the second division. After a 2: 3 defeat at the start against Västra Frölunda IF , the direct march through to the Swedish lower house was achieved through victories over IFK Ulricehamn and IFK Ystad . In the first season in the second division in the history of the club, the team reached fourth place in the table. As a result, she established herself in the front area and rose in 1979 as the champion of Division 2 Södra before Helsingborgs IF for the first time in the Allsvenskan.

Between first and second division (1980–1985)

The first division season in 1980 triggered euphoria in the place. Over 8,000 spectators attended the team's first home game from the town of almost 1,000 at the start of the season against Kalmar FF . Despite reinforcement by the former England international Frank Worthington in the course of the season, the club had no chance in the first division and had to relegate directly after three wins from 26 games as bottom of the table. After a fifth place in the first year after relegation, the club moved in the following year as a season winner in the relegation games that have now been introduced. After a 1-0 home win over Åtvidabergs FF , they were promoted again with a 1-1 draw in the second leg.

At the beginning of the second first division season in the club's history, Mjällby AIF was briefly at the top of the league table. The place could not be held, among other things a 0: 6 home defeat against AIK or a 1: 4 defeat at Örgryte IS in Ullevi meant a slide into the relegation battle. Again, the club with the Pole Andrzej Woronko committed foreign reinforcements to avoid direct relegation. With again three wins of the season, the team missed the season goal as the penultimate goal due to the poor goal difference against Gefle IF .

Behind Trelleborgs FF the relegated Mjällby AIF under coach Anders Linderoth reached the promotion games again with two points ahead of GAIS as second in the table in Division 2 Södra . After a 1-0 home win against Örebro SK in the second leg in front of 12,000 spectators at Eyravallen, they immediately returned to the first division with a clear 3-0 win. But the third stay in the Elite Series was only short. Two points behind IFK Norrköping , the team and bottom Trelleborgs FF were relegated for the third time after a season.

Third rate and establishment in the professional area as well as return to third rate (1986-2015)

Mjällby AIF missed direct promotion as second behind Västra Frölunda IF. In 1988 it was only enough for second place behind Halmstads BK , the better goal difference decided in favor of the rival with equal points. At the end of the decade, the club's streak ended. In 1990, the team missed relegation in the second division with one point behind Gunnilse IS and Landskrona BoIS . The immediate ascent was successful, but after two years there was another descent.

1996 Mjällby AIF returned to the second division. The team established itself in the midfield of the league. In 1999, the club missed the relegation round to Allsvenskan as third in the table with two points behind runner-up GAIS. The team was thus qualified for the new single-track Superettan. Here, too, she achieved third places in the first few years and thus the qualification for relegation. In the opening season 2000 she failed on penalties at BK Häcken , a year later after a 2-1 home win by a 1-3 defeat in the second leg at IFK Norrköping.

Mjällby AIF could not build on the successes in 2002 and was relegated from bottom of the table in the third division. Under the newly signed coach Sören Cratz , the team was promoted again in 2004. In the Superettan she took places in the middle of the table under Cratz and his successor Thomas Andersson-Borstam in the following years. In October 2008 Peter Swärdh took over the training at the club and in the course of the 2009 season the club was able to qualify early for the Allsvenskan. As a newcomer, the team surprised with a sixth place in the table, then the club placed in the lower midfield. At the beginning of 2013, Anders Torstensson took over the position of coach from Swärdh, who had moved on to Åtvidabergs FF within Allsvenskan. After relegation from Allsvenskan in 2014 and lost relegation to remain in the Superettan against Örgryte IS (0: 1 and 1: 1), Mjällby AIF had to compete in the 1st division Södra in 2016 .
