Career
societies
Wilhelmsson began his career in 1997 with the Swedish second division club Mjällby AIF . In three years he was there 51 times in league games and scored 11 goals. In 2000 he moved to Stabæk Fotball in Norway . There he developed into a very dangerous player: in 84 games he scored 25 goals. He was jointly responsible for qualifying for the 2002/03 UEFA Cup at Stabæk . During the game there against RSC Anderlecht , he noticed the coach who brought him to the Belgian First Division in Anderlecht for the 2003/04 season . During the season he developed more and more into a top performer of the club, who was able to win the Belgian championship. He also played a major role in Anderlecht's qualification for the group stage of the UEFA Champions League . In the following years Wilhelmsson was always a top performer in his club; so he came in the election for player of the year 2005 of the Belgian Jupiler League in third place behind Sérgio Conceição and Vincent Kompany . At the end of the 2005/06 season it was announced that he wanted to leave Anderlecht for the 2006/07 season despite a contract until July 2007. He first moved to FC Nantes in France, but then in January 2007 on loan to AS Roma in Italy. In July 2007 it was awarded again, this time to the Bolton Wanderers from England . There he had the option of a contract extension until 2012 in the event that he completed at least 20 missions from the start in the 2007/08 season. After only eight Premier League games as a substitute, the next loan station followed in January 2008: he moved to the Spanish club Deportivo La Coruña until the end of the season without a purchase option .
Wilhelmsson officially left FC Nantes on August 5, 2008 and moved to Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia. He cost 3.5 million euros transfer fee and signed until 2012. On September 5, 2011 he moved to the end of the season on loan to Qatar for Al-Ahli SC , where he was intended to be the successor of Opoku Agyemang who had migrated .
Wilhelmsson moved to Los Angeles Galaxy in September 2012 and signed until the end of the season. In January 2013 he moved to Baniyas SC . After his contract expired in the summer of 2014, he returned to Sweden. In July he signed a contract with his hometown club Mjällby AIF that was valid until the end of the season. In February 2015 he declared his career over.
National team
He already ran 16 times for the Swedish U-21 selection. He made his debut for Sweden's A-selection in January 2001 against the Faroe Islands (0-0). He was not used in any qualifying game for the 2004 European Championships , but was able to play his way in the preparatory games for this tournament in the Swedish squad and was used in Portugal in all four games. Since then he has been a regular in the Swedish team and was appointed to the squad at the 2006 World Cup and the 2008 European Championship by national coach Lars Lagerbäck . Wilhelmsson also took part in the European Championship in 2012 and was there in all three preliminary round matches when the selection failed in the group stage.
