Smith Newell Penfield

Smith Newell Penfield (born April 4, 1837 in Oberlin , Ohio , † January 7, 1920 in New York City ) was an American composer.

Life

Penfield studied at Oberlin College and in New York, then in Leipzig with Ignaz Moscheles , Carl Reinecke , Ernst Friedrich Richter and Moritz Hauptmann . He worked as a music teacher in Rochester and founded the Mozart Club and the Conservatory in Savannah . In 1885 he became president of The Music Teachers National Association .

Works

He composed a setting of the 18th Psalm , an overture , a string quintet, organ and piano pieces, choral works and songs .
