Sérgio Paulo Marceneiro da Conceição (born November 15, 1974 in Coimbra ) is a former Portuguese football player and current coach. He is currently coaching the Portuguese first division club FC Porto .
Player career
society
Conceição joined the professional squad of FC Penafiel in the 1992/93 season . He had previously worked in the youth department of the northern Portuguese. In his first season he developed into the core force of the then lower-class club. In the following years he moved to FC Leça and then to FC Felgueiras , before moving to FC Porto in 1996 . With FC Porto he won the SuperLiga twice and the Portuguese Cup once . Conceição scored nine goals in 56 league games for FC Porto.
In 1998 he moved from FC Porto to Lazio Rome , for which he also played in the UEFA Cup . In his first season in Serie A , he scored five goals in 33 games. In 1999 he moved into the final final of the European Cup Winners' Cup with Lazio . On May 19, 1999, the final against RCD Mallorca was won 2-1. Conceição came on in the 56th minute for Dejan Stanković . In the European Supercup final of the same year they beat Manchester United 1-0 . After two years he went to league rivals AC Parma , with whom he moved into the final of the Coppa Italia , in which they lost to AC Florence after two games . Another year later, Conceição signed a contract with Inter Milan . As an exchange, Sébastien Frey moved to Parma. After two years in Milan, he returned to Lazio Rome. However, there followed a disappointing first half of the season and he went back to FC Porto. There he was only under contract for half a year. Despite being in Porto for only six months, he won the Champions League and the championship .
For the 2004/05 season Conceição moved back abroad to Standard Liège . There he received a one-year contract. After performing well in the Jupiler League , he was awarded the Belgian Golden Shoe , the trophy for the best player of the season. He was ahead of Vincent Kompany and Christian Wilhelmsson in the election , making him the ninth foreign professional to receive this honor. His contract was extended. In March 2006, he spat on an opponent in a game against SV Zulte Waregem and attacked the referee after he had shown him the red card . For this offense he was banned from the Belgian Football Association for four months on April 11, 2006. In three years at Standard Liège, the team was twice third (2005, 2007) and once runner-up (2006).
After the 2006/07 season Conceição moved to Kuwait to Al Qadsia Kuwait . In seven games he scored five goals there. During the winter break, he moved to PAOK Thessaloniki in Greece . This transfer was arranged by the former PAOK player and current technical director of the club Zisis Vryzas . 7,000 supporters of the club appeared at Conceição's presentation. In Thessaloniki he received back number 7 from club legend Theodoros Zagorakis .
In November 2009, he ended his active career at the age of 35. He then became technical director at PAOK Thessaloniki.
National team
Conceição made his debut in the Portuguese national soccer team on November 9, 1996 in a game against Ukraine . In the course of his career he took part in the European Football Championship 2000 , in which he scored three goals in the game against Germany , and the 2002 World Cup.
Coaching career
At the end of May 2010, his former club Standard Liège Conceição signed for a year as an assistant coach . There he worked at the side of coach Dominique D'Onofrio . On January 1, 2012, he became head coach of the Portuguese first division club SC Olhanense . He signed a contract valid until the end of the 2013 season and took over the coaching position from Daúto Faquirá, who had previously been dismissed . In the following years he trained Académica de Coimbra , Sporting Braga and Vitória Guimarães . He has been a coach at FC Nantes since December 2016 . For the 2017/2018 season he moved to Portugal, to FC Porto.
