Series A 1998/99

The Serie A 1999/2000 was the 68th season in the top Italian football -Spielklasse of Lords. It started on August 29, 1999. The season ended on May 14, 2000 due to the European Football Championship 2000 in the Netherlands and Belgium . Lazio won the Scudetto , the Italian championship title . Torino Calcio , AC Venice , Cagliari Calcio and Piacenza Calcio had to relegate . The top scorer with 24 goals was Andrij Shevchenko from AC Milan , who was signed at the beginning of the season .

Season course

The title fight, for a long time a pentathlon between Lazio Rome , AS Roma , AC Parma , the defending champions AC Milan and the old lady Juventus Turin , was only decided on the last match day. After the bad season last year, Juventus Turin was back among the title contenders with their new coach Carlo Ancelotti , but gambled away the championship that was believed to be safe with a 1-0 defeat in Perugia . As a result, Lazio was able to overtake and secure the title despite being 9 points behind.

At last year's champions AC Milan, the euphoria of the championship season was quickly gone. Misunderstandings and mistrust in some parts of the team and the board of directors towards coach Alberto Zaccheroni made defending the title almost impossible. The sporting failure was not long in coming: In the Champions League , the end came in the preliminary round and in the league the team showed too little consistency after a good start to the season. City rivals Inter Milan started the new season with great expectations. Marcello Lippi had been signed by record champions Juventus Turin and struck on the transfer market. The most expensive commitment from club boss Massimo Moratti was Christian Vieri from Lazio Rome, who was only able to meet the high expectations to a limited extent. Only on the last matchday did Inter Milan perfect their qualification for the Champions League. AC Parma, who finished fourth with one lap to go, were intercepted by Inter Milan and had to be content with participating in the UEFA Cup . Fiorentina, who missed participation in the European Cup, got into financial difficulties. After the failure in the Champions League qualification and the resulting lack of income from the Champions League, the mountain of debt of the traditional club continued to rise. The Fiorentina was forced to sell their best players in order to survive financially. In the end they were also without a coach because Giovanni Trapattoni left the club to inherit Dino Zoff as Italy's national coach.

The relegation battle, however, was decided early on. The AC Venice , Cagliari Calcio and Piacenza Calcio were already relegated early. Torino Calcio rose after a 2-1 defeat at US Lecce and a simultaneous success of AS Bari in Venice on matchday 33.

    Dismissal / change of coach

Giovanni Trapattoni left Fiorentina and became the national coach of Italy

The young season saw the first change of coach when it had not even started. Francesco Guidolin's summer flirtation with Betis Sevilla was fatal. His employer fired him seven weeks before the start of the season and replaced him with Luigi De Canio . In the relegation battle only AC Turin relied on their coaching team, but that could not prevent relegation. Cagliari Calcio and AC Venice wore out several coaches in one season. AC Venice managed the feat of firing Luciano Spalletti twice within one season. Piacenza Calcio parted ways shortly after the first half of the season from Luigi Simone , who was inherited by interim coach Maurizio Braghin. After a disappointing season, at the end of which the Champions League participation was lost, Giovanni Trapattoni announced his departure at the end of the season. He succeeded Dino Zoff, who resigned after the European Football Championship in 2000 .
