FC Bayern Munich became the first in the 1999/2000 season of the Bundesliga and thus German men's championship . The season began on August 13, 1999 with the games VfL Wolfsburg against 1860 Munich and MSV Duisburg against Bayer Leverkusen. The last game day took place on May 20, 2000.
Season overview
The focus of the season was the duel for the championship title between Bayern Munich and Bayer 04 Leverkusen . Unlike in the previous season , when Bayern had worked out a 15-point lead at the end of the season, the championship question remained exciting until the end of the season and culminated in a long-distance duel on the last day of the match.
Bayer Leverkusen took over the championship lead on matchday 30 with a 4-1 win against Arminia Bielefeld after Bayern suffered a surprising 2-1 defeat in the derby against 1860 Munich . Both championship contenders won their following games (Leverkusen 3: 1 in Bremen , 2: 0 at HSV and 4: 1 against Frankfurt , Bayern 1: 0 in Dortmund , 4: 1 against Rostock and 3: 0 in Bielefeld), so the decision on last matchday fell. Leverkusen went into the away game at SpVgg Unterhaching with 73 points and a goal difference of +40 . Before the last matchday against Werder, Bayern had 70 points and a difference of +43, so three points more in this rating. A draw in Unterhaching or a point take by Bremen from Munich was enough for Leverkusen to win the championship.
Leverkusen ended up on Loser Street with an own goal by Michael Ballack after 20 minutes, while Munich played a 3-1 half-time lead. After 72 minutes, Markus Oberleitner from Unterhaching scored the last blow with a 2-0 Bayer 04, while no more goals were scored in Munich. Bayern Munich were tied with Leverkusen at the end of the season (73 points), but had a goal difference seven goals higher and won their 16th championship. The handover of the championship trophy should take place in the sports park in Unterhaching. Only one copy was in the Olympic Stadium in Munich and was presented to Bayern Munich after the game.
As in the previous year, Bayer Leverkusen finished second and was given the nickname Vizekusen after finishing second for the third time in four years . Bayer had already finished second in the 1996/97 season , back then behind FC Bayern Munich . With 73 points, Bayer Leverkusen was the strongest runner-up since the introduction of the three-point rule .
Newcomers Unterhaching managed to stay relegated relatively safely, Hamburger SV and 1860 Munich took third and fourth place and reached the qualifying games for the Champions League . The teams from Dortmund and Schalke, which were classified as stronger at the beginning, only just barely managed to stay in the league. Udo Lattek and co-trainer Sammer saved BVB with a 2-1 win at VfB Stuttgart.
In the relegation zone, two decisions were made prematurely: MSV Duisburg was relegated after a 1: 3 in Rostock on the 31st matchday, Arminia Bielefeld after the 33rd matchday after the 0: 3 against FC Bayern. Rostock, Frankfurt and SSV Ulm in 1846 played the last relegated among themselves; Hansa achieved their first away win of the season with a 2-0 win at FC Schalke 04 , and in the direct duel against Ulm Frankfurt retained the upper hand with 2-1.
In retrospect of this season, the game Hansa Rostock against SSV Ulm (2: 1), in which SSV Ulm received a total of 4 dismissals and the Ulm trainer had to go to the stands, was particularly noted.
