Mario Basler (born December 18, 1968 in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse ) is a German soccer coach and former professional soccer player .

Career as a player

societies

1. FC Kaiserslautern

From the youth of 1. FC Kaiserslautern , Basler rose to the professional squad in the 1987/88 season . In his first Bundesliga year , however, he was not used. As a contract amateur, he mostly played for the "little devils". In the following year, Basler had to wait a long time before making his debut. It was not until June 17, 1989 (34th matchday) - for FCK it was no longer about anything - that he made his first Bundesliga appearance in a 1-0 away win over Bayer 04 Leverkusen .

Red and white food

In order to gain more match practice, he moved to the 2nd Bundesliga at Rot-Weiss Essen in the summer of 1989 . Basler started working regularly in his first year. With 14 substitutions or substitutions in 20 games, he was mostly a substitute player. Rot-Weiss finished a very good season with sixth place. In the 1990/91 season, head coach Hans-Werner Moors relied more and more on the young player and only Willi Landgraf , Dirk Pusch and Ralf Regenbogen completed more league games than Basler, who only missed four of the 38 games and scored six goals. Although the team reached 15th place in the end and thus the sporting league, but had to accept the forced relegation due to license withdrawal . Basler then decided to change.

Hertha BSC

For the 1991/92 season , the capital club secured its services. When relegated to the Bundesliga, Basler was mainly used on the defensive and formed the defensive chain of the Berliners with Uli Bayerschmidt and André Winkhold . Shortly after the start of the new season, coach Bernd Stange was replaced by Günter Sebert , who put Basler back in midfield. With twelve goals in 44 games, Basler was Hertha’s second best scorer, only Theo Gries scored more often. Despite the 88 hits, the Herthaners only made it to fifth place in the second division. Due to his consistently good performance, Basler has since become interesting for top division clubs. After two years he ended his contractual relationship, Werder Bremen signed him for around two million DM.

Werder Bremen

Basler soon made it into the regular formation thanks to his good performance as a substitute. For the 1994/95 season , Bremen played for the German championship until the last match day , but missed it due to a 1: 3 defeat at Bayern Munich. With 20 goals, Basler was the top scorer of his team and together with Heiko Herrlich from Borussia Mönchengladbach became top scorer .

The following season was disappointing for the Bremen team, they only finished ninth. Basler nevertheless confirmed his good performance from the previous year and was again the best shooter of his team. He decided to leave the club in the summer of 1996. For the then high transfer fee of more than eight million DM, Bremen let him move to Munich.

FC Bayern Munich

At Bayern he had his most successful time in terms of titles. With eight goals, he was Bayern's second top scorer . At the end of his first season in Munich, he was German champion with the team. In the following season the title was missed; Basler has been with Bayern, not least due to a result obtained by him in the final gate, German Cup winner 1998 .

In the 1998/99 season Basler was once again German champion and reached the Champions League final against Manchester United with FCB , in which he took a 1-0 lead with a free kick; after a dramatic final phase, however, the club was still defeated 1: 2.

In November 1999 Basler was suspended by Bayern Munich after only two missions and his presence in a nightly tussle fight. According to a statement by Bayern manager Uli Hoeneß , there should have been frequent private misconduct by the player during Basel's time in Munich.

1. FC Kaiserslautern

In the same month he moved to 1. FC Kaiserslautern for 1.5 million marks, where he again met coach Otto Rehhagel , whom he knew from his time in Bremen. In the Palatine he was a regular player, but proved to be prone to injury. He scored eight goals in 91 games for Kaiserslautern. For the 2003/04 season , the 34-year-old, who was one of the club's big earners, no longer received a contract and moved abroad.

Al-Rayyan

In the Emirate of Qatar in Al-Rayyan, he ended his active football career after only one season at the Al-Rayyan Sports Club . He played here with the old Real Madrid star Fernando Hierro .

Further career as an amateur

From January 2006 until the men's team withdrew in 2010, Basler was active at ATSV Wattenheim .

In June 2011 Basler announced his comeback as an active player at the Augsburg district division BCA Oberhausen . The engagement came about due to a losing bet. Basler actually made his debut on the first day of the regional league season.

Another commitment at amateur level followed later, in Rüssingen , a town with around 500 inhabitants in the Donnersberg district in Rhineland-Palatinate . Since his debut on March 3, 2013, he played twice in the district league as a central defender for TuS Rüssingen, where the former Albanian international Clirim Bashi and, since the beginning of 2013, Mario Basler's son Marcel were also active. At the end of the season he rose with the club in the national league. In the association league season 2014/15 he appeared another five times (no goal) for the club. In the 2016/17 state league season, Basler made eight appearances for Rüssingen and scored one goal.

On April 4, 2016 Basler played in the 1: 2 defeat against SG Hüffelsheim for the first time in his career as a goalkeeper .

National team

In the 2-1 win over Italy on March 23, 1994 , Basler made his international debut when he came on for Thomas Häßler in the 78th minute . On June 2, 1994 he came on in the game against Austria in the 85th minute for Lothar Matthäus ; five minutes later he scored his first international goal to make it 5-1. At the soccer World Cup in 1994 he was used on June 17 against Bolivia. In 1996 he was part of the national team that won the title at the 1996 European Football Championship in England, but left after an injury to his right ankle before the group match against Russia after an injury to his right ankle in a training duel with Christian Ziege . On November 18, 1998 Basler wore the national jersey for the last time in the 1-1 draw against the Netherlands .

For winning the European Football Championship in 1996, he received - together with the national team - the silver bay leaf.

Style of play / statistics

One of Basler's special skills was that he was able to turn a corner kick directly into a goal by shooting the ball at the goal with his inner instep . In this way, he scored three goals in one season at SV Werder Bremen. He was also a feared free-kick taker. In the Bundesliga he scored 62 times in 262 games, in the 2nd Bundesliga 23 times in 128 games.

Career as a trainer and functionary

In January 2001 he took over the post of club president created especially for him at the district league club ATSV Wattenheim . In the period that followed, they were promoted to the association league until the first team was canceled after the 2009/10 season due to financial problems. During this time, Basel fell out with the club because he did not pay a promised injection of € 15,000. As a result, he was stripped of his office as honorary president of the association.

From June 2, 2004, Mario Basler was team manager at the second division relegated SSV Jahn Regensburg in the Regionalliga Süd . Here Basler planned to become a player-coach for a while and to play again himself. However, this was not allowed by the DFB . The 2004/05 season concluded the club in eighth place in the table. After a bad start to the 2005/06 season , Basler was released on September 19, 2005.

As a result, he took part in the DFB trainer course in Cologne and was then from summer 2007 to September 8, 2008 assistant trainer at TuS Koblenz .

Since September 9, 2008 - with a contract term until 2012 - he was employed as head coach at the regional league club Eintracht Trier , where he was meanwhile also sports director. The home game against Fortuna Düsseldorf II, which was lost 3-0 on February 20, 2010, worsened the ongoing sporting downturn, whereupon Basler was given leave of absence as head coach a day later by the management board (in coordination with the supervisory board).

On August 11, 2010, he took up the open coaching position at third division club Wacker Burghausen . Shortly after the end of the last day of the 3rd division 2010/11 on May 14, 2011 Basler was dismissed and replaced by Georgi Donkow after Basler had failed to keep the league goal. However, due to the forced relegation of Rot Weiss Ahlen due to insolvency , the goal was achieved.

On October 24, 2011, Mario Basler was introduced as the new head coach at the relegation-threatened third division club Rot-Weiß Oberhausen. There he signed a contract dated until the end of the 2011/12 season, which was prematurely extended to 2013 in April 2012 and remained valid at the end of the season despite being relegated to the bottom of the table. After a 3-0 home defeat against 1. FC Köln II, Mario Basler resigned as coach of the fourth division on September 14, 2012.

On January 21, 2015, Basler was introduced as the new “Managing Director Sport” of the first division club 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig . In his function, Basler was responsible for the conception and sporting orientation of the club. Promotion to the 3rd division was given as the goal. The collaboration ended early in March 2016.

On October 12, 2017 Basler was briefly coach of the relegation - threatened fifth-class league club Rot-Weiss Frankfurt . After eight games in which the team only scored seven points, the cooperation was ended in December 2017 as planned from the start.

In the summer of 2019, the A-classic TSG Eisenberg from Basel's Palatinate homeland announced its commitment as a consultant. His son Maurice is also active in the club.
