FC Bayern Munich became the first in the 1980/81 season in the German Bundesliga and thus German men's championship .

Season overview

On the 25th matchday, March 25, 1981, the league leaders HSV played against the second-placed defending champion FC Bayern, who was three points behind at that time. Up to the 66th minute, HSV led 2-0 with goals from Felix Magath and Horst Hrubesch and with this result could have increased their lead to five points. But Bayern were able to equalize with goals from Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in the 67th minute and Paul Breitner one minute before the end. HSV then lost 6-2 in Dortmund. On the 28th matchday, FC Bayern took over from HSV as championship leaders and in the end defended their title as German champions with a four-point lead.

The TSV 1860 Munich managed at home to Fortuna Dusseldorf a 4: 3 win after in the 60th minute with 0: had set back in third The goal scorer was u. a. Rudi Völler.

In return, the "Sechzger" suffered a sensitive 2: 3 defeat on matchday 30 against Bielefeld, who were also fighting for relegation , after they were 2-1 up until the 88th minute of the game.

With the rise of Arminia Bielefeld, a total of 10 teams from North Rhine-Westphalia played in the Bundesliga this season, which is a record. But none of them could reach one of the top places in the table.
