Hamburger SV became the first in the 1982/83 season in the German Bundesliga and thus German men's championship .
Season overview
In the 1982/83 season there was a duel for the championship between the two north German clubs, Hamburger SV and SV Werder Bremen. The defending champion HSV prevailed in the end thanks to the better goal difference against Werder, who came in second place in their second season after being promoted again. That was Bremen's greatest success since the vice championship in 1968.
On the first matchday Werder Bremen won 1-0 against Bayern Munich with an "own goal" by Munich goalkeeper Jean-Marie Pfaff : Uwe Reinders threw a throw- in into the Munich goal area . Pfaff took his hand to the ball that was jumping over him and touched it. The ball went into the goal without another player on the ball. Since a throw-in must not lead directly to a goal, the touch of the ball by Pfaff was decisive; had he not touched the ball, the goal would not have counted.
Hamburger SV also won the European Cup with a 1-0 win against Juventus Turin in Athens . The goal scorer was Felix Magath .
The Cup final played in Cologne of 1. FC Cologne and SC Fortuna Köln . The game ended 1-0, Pierre Littbarski scored the decisive goal. With the cup victory of 1. FC Köln, Werder Bremen, VfB Stuttgart and Bayern Munich also qualified for the UEFA Cup.
