FC Bayern Munich became the first in the 1979/80 season in the German Bundesliga and thus German men's championship .

Season overview

Two game days before the end of the season, HSV and Bayern Munich were tied at the top of the table. Both had a goal difference of +48, only because of two more goals scored, HSV was in first place. HSV lost 2-1 at promoted Leverkusen on the penultimate match day, while Bayern won their last two games and became German champions for the sixth time. The HSV also lost the European Cup final of the national champions against Nottingham Forest with 0: 1. It was Kevin Keegan's last season in Hamburg.

Curious: for the first time since the introduction of the Bundesliga in the 1963/64 season , two teams shared a place. Kaiserslautern and Stuttgart both finished 3rd in the final table. The direct comparison ended 2: 1 and 1: 3 from Kaiserslautern's point of view; since 1999/2000 this criterion also decides on the table position.

Fortuna Düsseldorf defended the DFB Cup. 1. FC Köln were defeated 2-1.

Audience rioting

In the third round (August 28) there were riots and fights at Eintracht Frankfurt against VfB Stuttgart, with 18 people, some seriously injured, and five people arrested. The police were u. a. Blanket pistols, a 4mm pistol, and leather-covered killers were confiscated.
