Werner Burgers (born May 15, 1934 ; † August 24, 2004 ) was a German football referee .

Referee career

Burgers, a typesetter in his main profession, was a referee for the club VfL Sportfreunde 07 Essen. He was active for over 50 years and headed a total of 41 Bundesliga games from 1970 to 1980 .

He caused a stir on the first Bundesliga matchday of the 1977/78 season in the encounter between 1. FC Kaiserslautern and Eintracht Braunschweig on the Betzenberg . After an incident between Franz Merkhoffer from Braunschweig and Josef Pirrung from Kaiserslautern , he decided on a penalty for Kaiserslautern, which led to violent protests from the Eintracht players. In the tumult, Burgers struck down the Braunschweig sweeper, Reiner Hollmann , with an elbow blow in the neck. Hollmann passed out and was taken to the hospital lying down, where a concussion was found. Burger invoked a protective reflex and denied having deliberately delivered the blow.

Reinhard Meier converted the 911 and the "red devils" won 2-1 in the end. Braunschweig protested and demanded a rescheduling, but the DFB refused. World star Paul Breitner , who moved to Braunschweig from Real Madrid, said, "I didn't know that the referees in Germany could knock out players." For this he was given a fine of 5000 marks by the DFB.

In another game, again with the participation of Braunschweiger Eintracht, Burgers attracted attention with a controversial decision. In the 1979/80 season at VfB Stuttgart he let Stuttgart take the free kick after a foul while he was warning the Eintracht player and recognized the resulting goal with the words: “Yes, that's the penalty for it. "

Honorary positions

From 1970 to 1986, Burgers belonged to the district youth committee in District 12 of the Niederrhein Football Association (FVN), and was then elected chairman of the district youth ruling chamber and held this office until his death. Until 2001 he was chairman of the district's leisure and popular sports committee. In addition, Burgers worked in the FVN's district court and from 1971 to 1981 for the Essen Sports Youth and the Stadtsportbund.
