The 2020/21 Bundesliga is the 58th season of the top German division in men's football . It was opened on September 18, 2020 with the game of the reigning champions FC Bayern Munich against FC Schalke 04 (8: 0) and should end on May 22, 2021 with the 34th matchday. The relegation games are planned for May 26th and 29th, 2021. From December 22, 2020 to January 1, 2021, the season was interrupted by a shortened winter break. The framework schedule provides for three weeks in English . A total of 306 league and two relegation games are to be completed. Since the 30th matchday, FC Schalke 04 has been arithmetically the first relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga . FC Bayern Munich won their ninth championship in a row with the defeat of RB Leipzig against Borussia Dortmund on matchday 32.
Season course
First round
The series and record champions Bayern Munich started the new season with an 8-0 win over Schalke 04 , which meant the highest victory in a Bundesliga opening game. After the 5th matchday, the team around keeper Manuel Neuer never conceded a goal until the 17th round, but scored 49 goals themselves, 16 more than the second most accurate team, Borussia Dortmund . From the 6th matchday onwards, FC Bayern was pushed out of the top position only twice and at the end of the first half of the season was four points ahead of RB Leipzig at the top of the table.
Next to Bayer Leverkusen, Leipzig was the closest pursuer of Bayern and was at the top three times in the course of the Hinserie. Of all the participants who were on a European Cup rank after the first 17 games, the Saxons had scored the second fewest goals and after the loss of national striker Timo Werner did not have a scorer or scorer in the top 10 lists. On the other hand, there were the fewest goals against (14), ahead of Leverkusen with a value of 17.
From the 5th matchday onwards, Leverkusen consistently occupied Champions League ranks. Eight points were won against rivals Dortmund, Munich, Leipzig, Mönchengladbach and Wolfsburg , but counters were lost against teams from the lower third of the table such as Bremen or Hertha BSC .
Borussia Dortmund was one of only three teams to change coach in the first half of the season: After a 1: 5 against promoted Stuttgart , Lucien Favre was relieved of his duties after eleven games. In addition to VfB, BVB also lost to Cologne and Augsburg , confirming the negative trend against statistically weaker opponents from the previous season . Erling Haaland again proved his importance with almost a third of the total goals in Dortmund; Despite rank 4 in the first round table, the Westphalia were also the team with the most defeats from the top 10.
Wolfsburg had to accept the third few goals in the first half of the season. The wolves defied direct rivals such as Leipzig, Leverkusen and Eintracht Frankfurt important points and stayed on an international starting place after seven games. Likewise Union Berlin , which in its second year in the House of Lords was able to outbid its performances from the first season (rank 11, only two-digit table ranks).
Since the beginning of the season, both Schalke 04 and 1. FSV Mainz 05 have been in a relegation battle. Apart from these two teams, no other team finished last in the first half of the season, and no one else won only once. Schalke was only able to record their first victory on the 15th matchday, which meant a season-spanning victory series of 30 games. In addition, the Westphalians had to accept by far the most goals against with 44, which resulted in a goal difference of -30 with only 14 own hits. After the first 17 matchdays, both teams separated eight points from relegation rank and ten points from 15th place. At times, Cologne, which had only narrowly escaped relegation last year, and promoted Arminia Bielefeld were also at risk .
Second half of the season
On matchday 32, the championship was decided in favor of FC Bayern Munich. With Borussia Dortmund's 3-2 win against RB Leipzig, Leipzig was no longer able to reach first place in the table. FC Bayern only appeared later in the evening game and won it 6-0 against Borussia Mönchengladbach . Munich had also been able to prevail victoriously against Dortmund, Leipzig, Wolfsburg and Leverkusen, but lost against Eintracht Frankfurt and Mainz 05 each with 1: 2. Bayern striker Robert Lewandowski also drew level with the previous record holder Gerd Müller in the penultimate game of the season with his 40th goal of the season .
Places 2 to 4 qualify for participation in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League, as in the previous year. RB Leipzig was already confirmed as a participant after the 32nd matchday, with a 2-2 win against Leipzig, VfL Wolfsburg also secured participation in the premier class on the 33rd matchday . Eintracht Frankfurt held fourth place in the Champions League for a long time, and after a 2-1 win on matchday 27, they were seven points ahead of Dortmund, who were in fifth place. However, with a series of six wins in a row, BVB managed to push Frankfurt from fourth place. After Eintracht did not get beyond a draw at Mainz 05, BVB scored the 3-2 winner in the final minutes in the "top game" against RB Leipzig on matchday 32 and thus took fourth place. The final entry into the Champions League was on the 33rd matchday with a 3: 1 in Mainz, while Frankfurt had lost its game the day before with the already relegated FC Schalke 04 with 3: 4 and thus remained the Europa League .
Bayer Leverkusen failed prematurely and again to qualify for the Champions League and had parted ways with coach Peter Bosz after just 26 match days . Together with Borussia Mönchengladbach, Union Berlin, VfB Stuttgart and SC Freiburg , the Rhinelander competed for one of three places in the European and the newly introduced Conference League . A draw against Union Berlin secured 6th place and thus repeated participation in the Europa League, which Mönchengladbach missed with a 1: 2 against Stuttgart.
In the back series Schalke 04 remained without a win until the 28th matchday. With a victory by Cologne - penultimate at the time - on matchday 30 and a simultaneous defeat of the Royal Blues , the relegation rank was mathematically no longer achievable with four remaining games. After 30 consecutive seasons in the House of Lords, the club suffered their fourth descent into the second division. 1. FSV Mainz 05 benefited from extensive changes in the coaching bench and in management and so far only lost three games in the second half of the season, even defeating RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich and gradually moving away from the table cellar. In addition to the Rheinhessen, five other clubs - including Cologne, Werder Bremen and Hertha BSC - had to fear for relegation before the 33rd match day . In round 33, there were direct clashes only between Hertha BSC and 1. FC Köln and between FC Augsburg and Bremen. Mainz saved itself before its game against BVB, as did Hertha and Augsburg, as Cologne and Arminia Bielefeld only played a draw and Bremen lost to FCA . In order to decide the three-way battle on the final day of the match, Arminia (32 points) as well as 1. FC Köln (30 points) and Werder (31 points) would have to win their respective games.
Effects of the COVID-19 pandemic
According to the original plan, the season should open on August 21, 2020 and end on May 15, 2021. Since the pre-season game operations were interrupted for several weeks between March 11 and May 16, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the international club competitions of the same season did not end until August 2020, a later start of the season was set.
Due to this shift, the DFB and the DFL adjusted the summer transfer period (generally July 1 to August 31) in consultation with FIFA . The transfer window was open on July 1 (changeover period I.1) and from July 15 to October 5, 2020 (changeover period I.2). The first, one-day phase was intended in particular for the registration of contracts that had already been concluded from July 1st.
The health ministers of the federal states agreed in August 2020 that no spectators would be admitted to the Bundesliga stadiums until October 31; after the DFL schedule, the first five to six match days would have to continue with ghost games. On September 15, 2020, three days before the start of the new season, the prime ministers and representatives of the league agreed on a concept that would allow an audience of 20 percent of the stadium's capacity by the end of October. However, due to the increased number of infections in Munich, the opening game of FC Bayern took place in front of empty stands.
Ultimately, on the first six match days, 22 of 54 games had to be played behind closed doors, but on average only 2,900 spectators were allowed to enter the stadiums. After a resolution by the Prime Minister on October 29th, a general ban on viewers was finally ordered for at least matchdays 7 to 9. The background to this is the nationwide shutdown , which was initially only extended to November and later several times until mid-April, but which did not include general gaming operations in the two national leagues.

Records
- Before the season, the age limit was reduced from 17 to 16 years at the request of Borussia Dortmund. Previously, 16-year-olds were only eligible to play if they were formally part of the younger A-Juniors class (in this 2003 season). BVB player Youssoufa Moukoko , who was born in 2004, made his Bundesliga debut one day after his 16th birthday, replacing Nuri Şahin , who also played for BVB in 2005 at the age of 16 and 335 days, as the youngest player in league history. At the age of 16 years and 28 days, the Dortmund player later replaced Florian Wirtz ( Bayer 04 Leverkusen ) as the youngest goal scorer in the top German division.
- With the 8-0 opening success, FC Bayern Munich achieved the highest victory in a Bundesliga opening game against FC Schalke 04 .
- For the first time, two coaches were dismissed after the 2nd match day.

referee
Compared to the previous season, the number of referees remained the same at 26. Florian Badstübner from Bavaria is included on the list of Bundesliga referees for the first time. Robert Kampka , who only directs games in the 2nd Bundesliga this season , is no longer there . In addition, the DFB named two referees, Matthias Jöllenbeck and Tobias Reichel, who are to be used in the Bundesliga for “perspective support”.
Before she could direct a game this season, Bibiana Steinhaus declared the end of her career on September 30, 2020. She continues to work as a video assistant . The number of referees thus fell to 25.
For Markus Schmidt, Manuel Gräfe and Guido Winkmann it is the last season before they reach the age limit of 47 years.
