Werder Bremen was the first in the 1987/88 season of the German Bundesliga and thus German men's championship .

Season overview

After three runner-up championships in the last five years, Werder Bremen won the German championship in the 1987/88 season. While Bremen were mainly known for their offensive football in previous years, this year it was their strong defense with only 22 goals conceded that was decisive for winning the title. SV Werder was already the champions three game days before the end of the season. Trainer Otto Rehhagel coined the term “controlled offensive”. Defending champions Bayern Munich , 1. FC Cologne , VfB Stuttgart and 1. FC Nürnberg qualified for the UEFA Cup . In the relegation between SV Waldhof Mannheim and the third division in the 2nd Bundesliga, SV Darmstadt 98 , a third game had to decide. This ended in a draw even after extra time. The decision in favor of SV Waldhof was only made on penalties.
