Günter Hermann (born December 5, 1960 in Rehburg ) is a former German football player . As a member of the German national soccer team , he became soccer world champion in 1990 .

Player career

society

Günter Hermann played in the Bundesliga for Werder Bremen and SG Wattenscheid 09 , in the 2nd Bundesliga for Hannover 96 . With Werder he was German champion in 1988 and DFB Cup winner in 1991 . In 1992 he also won the European Cup Winners' Cup with Bremen .

In 1982 Hermann joined the Werder Bremen professional squad. On the 17th matchday, December 11, 1982, he came to his professional debut in the first division. In the 2-1 win against VfL Bochum , the defensive player came on for Michael Böhnke in the 76th minute . This was his only one in his first year as a professional. In the following season , Hermann only played one game. During the 1984/85 season, however , he played his way more and more into the regular team, slipping on the green and white jersey 31 times, but was still a substitute player with 20 substitutions or substitutions. Hermann also scored his first Bundesliga goal against 1. FC Kaiserslautern on matchday 14 when he scored 2-0. The game ended 2-2. In the years to come, Hermann earned a place as a regular and top player for the North Germans. In the 1987/88 season he won the German championship with Bremen, two years later, in 1991 , he and his team were in the final of the DFB Cup . In the final against 1. FC Köln , Hermann was substituted in the 75th minute when the score was 1: 1 against Gunnar Sauer . After 90 minutes and extra time there was still no winner, so the penalty shoot-out had to produce the winner. The Bremen team secured victory there and qualified for the international competition for the European Cup Winners' Cup the following year . In this, the new team caused a stir, defeating Ferencváros Budapest , Galatasaray Istanbul and Club Bruges before they met AS Monaco in the final and defeated them 2-0. However, Hermann was not on the field for this victory and only saw the game as a spectator. In 1993 he could have become German champions for the second time with the Hanseatic League, but only played five games in the first half of the season and therefore decided in November 1992 to move to SG Wattenscheid 09.

There he had his debut for Bochum against Karlsruher SC on December 5th, matchday 16 . 16 more games were added by the end of the season. In the 3-0 defeat against 1. FC Köln on March 27, 1993, Hermann received his first and only red card after just 28 minutes, but was only canceled for two game days. In the new season, the midfielder stayed with the Wattenscheidern for only half a year and switched to the 2nd division at Hannover 96 during the winter break of the 1993/94 season, where he became a regular and played 19 games. The following year went well for him and he got regular playing time. In the 1995/96 season he then had to struggle with minor injuries and with players like Reinhold Daschner , Marco Dehne and Andreas Winkler greater competition, which meant that he only made four missions by the winter break. Hermann played his last professional game on November 7, 1995 against SpVgg Unterhaching , when he was on the pitch for the full 90 minutes. At the end of the season he officially ended his professional career.

National team

In the national team , he played twice from 1988 to 1990 and, without having played a game at the World Cup, became world champion at the 1990 World Cup in Italy . Hermann played his first game on September 21, 1988 against the USSR in a 1-0 win in a friendly. He then waited a year and a half for his second and last appearance, Germany won 1-0 against Denmark on May 30, 1990 . Hermann came on for Andreas Brehme in the second half .

Although he did not play at the 1990 World Cup, he was awarded the silver bay leaf as world champion - together with the squad deployed .

useful information

During his time at Werder Bremen, Hermann was a classic substitute player. In 231 league games for the green-whites , he was substituted 60 times and 29 times. On August 9, 1985, the first game day of the 1985/86 season , he was substituted for FC Schalke 04 both on and off. Already in the fifth minute coach moved him Otto Rehhagel for Benno Möhlmann one before he exchanged Hermann after 59 minutes again, and Thomas Wolter brought into play. So he was involved in a change in a total of 88 games.
