Gunnar Sauer (born June 11, 1964 in Cuxhaven ) is a former German football player . He started his career at Cuxhavener SV . In the Bundesliga he played for Werder Bremen from 1984 to 1996 . He was also active in the 2nd Bundesliga for Hertha BSC and VfB Leipzig . In total, he made 134 Bundesliga games (8 goals) and 20 second division games.

Sauer was in the national team for the 1988 European Football Championship in Germany . At the 1988 Summer Olympics , he won bronze with the German team.

As a technically skilled defensive player, Sauer could have taken on the role of libero based on the style of play of Franz Beckenbauer ; but due to a variety of injuries, he was never able to reach his potential.

After his sports career, Sauer became a real estate agent.
