Werder Bremen was the first in the 1992/93 season of the German Bundesliga and thus German men's championship .
Season overview
In the Bundesliga season 1992/93 Werder Bremen under Otto Rehhagel was one point ahead of Bayern Munich German champions . On the eleventh match day Werder, which had lost a few points until then, won 3-1 at Bayern in Munich. Werder also won the second leg on matchday 28 with 4-1, which meant that Bremen drew level with Bayern on points. On the 33rd matchday they defeated Hamburger SV 5-0 and, due to the better goal difference, took the lead in front of Bayern, who had been at the top of the table without interruption since the first matchday. On the last day of the match, FC Bayern only managed a 3: 3 against FC Schalke 04 . Werder Bremen, on the other hand, won 3-0 with goals from Thomas Wolter and twice Bernd Hobsch at VfB Stuttgart and thus became German champions for the third time since 1965 and 1988.
The sixth place for Karlsruher SC , which qualified for the UEFA Cup , was unexpected for experts . There you got to the semifinals in the following season. It was the beginning of the Baden era under coach Winfried Schäfer , which lasted until 1997. The SG Wattenscheid 09 , which could be for four years in the league, managed again in the league.
On the last match day of the first half of the season, all 18 clubs advertised with the slogan “ My friend is a foreigner ” instead of the usual sponsor lettering on the shirt chest. The DFB thus set an example against the riots in Rostock-Lichtenhagen in August 1992.
