Uwe Harttgen (born July 6, 1964 in Bremen ) is a former German football player , functionary and sports psychologist . He played mainly for Werder Bremen , initially in attacking midfield and towards the end of his career as a libero .

Career

As a player

Harttgen began his career as a footballer in the adult sector, unusual for a later professional, in the district class B , where he played as a recreational athlete with friends. The first semi-professional station was then the former league club FC Mahndorf , where he was discovered at the age of 23 by SV Werder for the second team, who was looking for an older leader. Two years later, during the 1989/90 season, Harttgen was used by Bremen for the first time in the Bundesliga . Harttgen was able to fight his way into the starting eleven in the second half of the season. In the great times of Bremen in the early 1990s, he remained a regular player, but in the 1993/94 season he was only able to play one game in the Bundesliga due to health problems. Harttgen moved to Hannover 96 in 1994 in the 2nd Bundesliga , for this club he made 37 appearances in two years and scored 4 goals. During the 1995/96 season he went back to SV Werder, where he played mainly in the second team. In 1997/98 he came again to five Bundesliga appearances. In total he came to 82 games and 15 goals in the first division.

As a psychologist and functionary

Harttgen initially worked as a qualified psychologist in the youth performance center of SV Werder Bremen, before replacing the club's youth manager, Wolf Werner , in the summer of 2007 . On July 5, 2007, Harttgen was also Werner's successor in the Regional League Committee as a representative for the second teams of the Bundesliga.

On November 14, 2012, the DFL announced that Harttgen would take over the position of chairman of the Higher Education Commission on January 1, 2013, and that he would succeed Andreas Rettig .

On May 8, 2013 Werder announced the amicable separation from Harttgen due to differing views on the future promotion of young talent.

On January 9, 2014, the regional league team Rot-Weiss Essen announced the commitment of Uwe Harttgen as the new sports director from February 1, 2014. However, on March 24, 2015, Harttgen was dismissed without notice after allegedly extending his contract with coach Marc Fascher , contrary to the instructions of the supervisory board .

Others

In 2010, Harttgen received his doctorate in psychology from the University of Bremen on the subject of psychological aspects of the development of young competitive footballers .
