After his active time as a referee, Wieland Ziller was involved in the 2005 soccer betting scandal surrounding Robert Hoyzer in his capacity as a referee supervisor . On November 27, 2004, he had received a sum of at least 25,000 euros from Ante Sapina , the convicted mastermind of the scandal, and gave the impression that he was passing a large part of this amount on to the supposedly manipulative referee Jürgen Jansen . In fact, however, Ziller kept all the money to himself and did not contact Jansen. He was banned for his actions by the DFB for 5 months, from the end of May to the end of October 2005, for official tasks and functions within the DFB.
