Football betting scandal

2005

Ante Šapina is considered to be the mastermind behind the soccer betting scandal in 2005 . With the help of his two brothers, he manipulated football games in Germany and Europe from the Berlin Café King . The referee Robert Hoyzer helped him . In 2005, Šapina was sentenced to two years and eleven months in prison by the Berlin Regional Court for the fraud; the judgment was confirmed in 2006 by the 5th criminal division of the Federal Court of Justice . In July 2008, Ante Šapina was released.

In a civil case at the Berlin Regional Court in 2007, he reached an agreement with the Deutsche Klassenlotterie Berlin on the repayment of 1.8 million euros from unjustified profits.

2009

Šapina was also involved in the 2009 soccer betting scandal . After his release from prison in July 2008, Šapina placed money on postponed games on the Asian betting market through a London betting broker. He was one of the main suspects in the soccer betting scandal in 2009 and was held in custody in the Dortmund prison until April 15, 2011. In 2011 the main hearing against Šapina and others began before the Bochum Regional Court . The public prosecutor charged them with 47 manipulated games. Šapina was sentenced to another five and a half years in prison.

2012: Repeal of previous judgments

In December 2012, the Federal Court of Justice declared the previous judgments against Šapina and an accomplice to be invalid and overturned them. On the one hand, Šapina's confession did not have a sufficient impact on the mitigation of the sentence. On the other hand, it must be checked again whether it is not a consummate fraud or a gang fraud. This meant that the criminal case had to be tried again before a regional court, which was also supposed to quantify the exact amount of the damage.

2014: Another conviction

In April 2014 he was sentenced to five years in prison by the Bochum regional court.

Active football career

Before the betting scandal in Berlin, Šapina was mainly an amateur soccer player. He played in the 1990s for the Berlin Athletics Club 07 and SD Croatia Berlin , where he ended his career in 2003.
