Ulrich Ernst "Uli" Borowka (born May 19, 1962 in Menden (Sauerland) ) is a former German football player and coach.

Career

Borowka first learned the trade of machinist. In the Bundesliga he was active for Borussia Mönchengladbach and Werder Bremen . As a defender, Borowka played a total of 388 Bundesliga games from 1981 to 1996 and scored 19 goals. With Werder Bremen, he was in 1988 and 1993 German Champion and in 1991 and 1994 German Cup winner . The highlight of his career was winning the 1991/92 European Cup Winners' Cup with Werder Bremen in Lisbon .

The defender known as "Eisenfuß" - or also known as "the ax" - was valued and feared as being particularly strong in shooting and duels. Even if his footballing talent was rather limited, he was considered one of the best and toughest defenders of his time in a duel. Borowka was also known for his trash talk . Opponent of Olaf Thon in his Bundesliga debut in 1984 against Mönchengladbach, what he remembered: "My opponent was Uli Borowka and he received me with the words: 'Today I'll break both your legs.'" But that never happened. A few years in a row, his football colleagues voted him the most unpopular player in the league in the "kicker" election.

In 1988 Borowka wore the jersey of the German national team six times and took part in the European Championship in Germany , where he was used in all four games of the DFB-Elf. By his own testimony he has from that time even a jersey of Diego Maradona , on which he in his first international match against Argentina met on 2 April 1988th After the European Championship, Borowka was no longer taken into account by team boss Franz Beckenbauer . However, he was part of the German national team for the 1988 Olympic Games, but was not used.

After he left Werder Bremen in 1996 and had a brief contract with Tasmania Neukölln and Hannover 96 in Berlin , Borowka moved to Widzew Lodz in early 1997 , making him the first German football player in a professional league in the area of the former Eastern Bloc , the Ekstraklasa in Poland . But the trainer Franciszek Smuda , with whom he communicated in German, only used him eight times. Because of his persistent alcohol consumption, the club did not renew Borowka's contract after one season, whereupon he ended his active career in 1998.

After retirement

After the end of the career, Borowka was a topic in the tabloid media because of alcohol-related and family problems. In 1996 he caused a car accident while under the influence of alcohol.

He has been abstinent since a four-month inpatient withdrawal treatment in 2000. In an autobiography, “Volle Pulle. My double life as a professional soccer player and alcoholic “he has processed his career and alcohol addiction. Borowka also founded an addiction prevention association and advises players with addiction problems.

In 1997, 2000, 2001 and 2003 he worked as a trainer for the upper division clubs FC Oberneuland , Berliner AK 07 , Türkiyemspor Berlin and again at Berliner AK 07.

Borowka recorded a single with the Bremen punk band Dimple Minds with the title Barfuß oder Lackschuh . Since 2007 Borowka has been self-employed in the field of sports marketing and also organizes youth soccer camps.

Borowka is married for the second time. He is the father of three children (two children from his first marriage and a daughter from his second marriage) and lives in Hämelerwald near Lehrte , Lower Saxony (Hanover region).
