Olaf Thon (born May 1, 1966 in Gelsenkirchen ) is a former German soccer player and coach . He played as a professional for FC Schalke 04 and FC Bayern Munich and took part in three world championships and one European championship with the German national team.
Career
society
Thon first played in the youth teams of STV Horst-Emscher from 1972 to 1980 and then moved to FC Schalke 04 . On August 5, 1983, he made his debut for the "Knappen" as the second youngest player in the history of the 2nd Bundesliga . In his first year with the Schalke professionals, he played 38 second division games, scored 14 goals and was instrumental in direct recovery in the 1983/84 season . Next to him, only goalkeeper Walter Junghans played all point games for the Gelsenkirchen team. Thon became known in May 1984 through the DFB Cup semi-final between Schalke and FC Bayern Munich , in which Thon scored three goals when he was just 18. The game ended 6: 6 after extra time. Thon scored shortly before the end of the game after a free kick to equalize. Bayern Munich won the replay in Munich 3-2. On August 24, 1984 Thon completed his first game in the Bundesliga against Borussia Mönchengladbach , which Schalke lost 3-1.
In the summer of 1988 Thon moved to Bayern Munich. He quickly became a top performer and regular player there too. His style of play changed over time. The then coach of Bayern, Erich Ribbeck , ordered Thon more and more often to the defense center. With the Munich team he was German champion in 1989, 1990 and 1994 .
After being used only 15 times in the 1993/94 season , he moved back to Gelsenkirchen for the following season. With Schalke he won the 1997 UEFA Cup and the DFB Cup in 2001 and 2002 .
Olaf Thon ended his career as a Bundesliga player in 2002 after several protracted injuries (ligament tears, ankle injuries). His farewell game on January 18, 2003 between Schalke 04 and Bayern Munich ended with a goal from Giovane Élber with 0: 1 from the Schalke side. As a midfielder and as a libero , he played a total of 443 times (82 goals) in the Bundesliga for FC Schalke 04 and FC Bayern Munich.
National team
Thon wore the jersey of the senior team 52 times between 1984 and 1998 and scored three goals; one each against Denmark (1986), Israel (1987) and Denmark (1988).
He made his debut on December 16, 1984 against Malta . At 18 years and 229 days, he was the third youngest national player in the history of the DFB ; only Uwe Seeler and Mario Götze were younger. 14 years later, on June 25, 1998, in the 2-0 win against Iran during the preliminary round of the 1998 World Cup in France , he played his last game for the German selection.
He took part in the 1986 , 1990 and 1998 World Championships and the 1988 European Championships . In 1986 he was runner-up in Mexico, but was not used at the tournament. In 1990 he made two appearances in Italy and paved the way to the final against Argentina , which the German national team won with his goal to make it 5-4 on penalties in the semi-final against England , as the last shooter .
Career after the playing career
From June 2005 to June 2008 he was a member of the supervisory board of the Bundesliga soccer club FC Schalke 04 and then took on a position in the marketing department for the club. In April 2009, Schalke announced the amicable separation from Thon on July 31, 2009.
His position as head coach at NRW league club VfB Hüls , which he made famous in February 2010 , did not start at the beginning of the 2010/11 season, as originally planned, but - due to the early termination of the contract of former Bundesliga player Klaus Täuber - in April 2010. Am September 15, 2011 he resigned as a coach due to differences with the older players on the team.
Since 2012 he has been employed again at FC Schalke 04 as the official representative of the club and has headed the independent “traditional team” department of FC Schalke 04 since 2015. Here he is primarily responsible for coordinating game dates, organizing traditional team games and recruiting members active.
In addition to his obligations for the FC Schalke 04 club, Olaf Thon has been very present in the media for a long time. He was a commentator on German sports television (DSF) and then a football expert on n-tv . In the Sport1 team of experts, he accompanies and analyzes the games of the German teams in the UEFA Europa League . He also does the Monday matchday analyzes for this television station. He is also a columnist for the sports magazine Kicker .
