This article describes the German national football team at the 1990 World Cup in Italy .

qualification

In qualifying for the 1990 World Cup, there were groups of four and groups of five teams. In the latter case, the two best teams qualified. From the three groups of four, only the two best runners-up qualified alongside the group winners. In qualifying for the 1990 World Cup, Germany had to play against the Netherlands , Finland and Wales . After two draws against their main rivals from the Netherlands, a goalless draw in Wales meant that only second place was achieved. Häßler's winning goal in the last game against Wales ensured that the German team could qualify as one of the two best runners-up out of the groups of four for the World Cup.
