Jozef Chovanec (* 7. March 1960 in Považská Bystrica , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czechoslovakian footballer and current football coach or official . He has Czech citizenship.

Player career

The former Czechoslovak national player began his career in Dolné Kočkovce . Sparta Prague signed him for the 1978/79 season . He did his army service between 1979 and 1981 at RH Cheb . Then he returned to Prague. In 1989 the defender moved to PSV Eindhoven , with whom he was twice Dutch champion and cup winner. He returned to Sparta in 1991 and ended his career there in 1995. With Sparta he became champion eight times. In 1986 he was Czechoslovak footballer of the year . He took part in the 1990 World Cup in Italy .

Chovanec completed 333 games in the 1st Czechoslovak League and scored 49 goals. In the 1st Czech league he played 48 times, eight times he scored a goal. For Czechoslovakia Chovanec played 52 times. He scored four goals.

Trainer and functionary career

On the 6th matchday of the 1996/97 season Chovanec took over the coaching position at Sparta Prague. With the team he won two championship titles. In 1998 he became the coach of the Czech national football team . He was voted coach of the year in the Czech Republic in 1998, 1999 and 2000.

After the Czech Republic failed to qualify for the World Cup in 2002 to Belgium , Chovanec resigned. From August 2002 to November 2003 he was a coach with Marila Příbram . He then took over the post of sports director there, which he held until the beginning of 2004. In the 2005 season he was the coach of the Russian second division club FK Kuban Krasnodar . In January 2006 he became President of Sparta Prague. From autumn 2008 to autumn 2011 he was again a coach at Sparta Prague and became the Czech champions with the team in 2010. In the 2012/13 season Chovanec Baniyas SC trained from Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.

In the 2013/14 season he was initially the sporting director of the Slovak first division club MFK Ružomberok, before moving to the coaching position during the season. In October 2014, he followed František Straka as a coach at Slovan Bratislava .
