Karel Brückner (born November 13, 1939 in Olomouc , Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia ) is a former Czech football player and coach .
From 2001 to 2008 he was the head coach of the Czech national team, with whom he reached the semi-finals of the European Championship in 2004. Then Brückner looked after the Austrian national team.
Player career
Brückner started as a striker and attacking midfielder for Sigma Olomouc . In 1965 he moved to Baník Ostrava , but was only used there in the B team in the second Czechoslovak league. After only one season, the attacker went back to Olomouc, where he ended his playing career in 1974 and immediately switched to the coaching post.
Coaching career
In the first year under Brückner, the team rose from the fourth to the third division. Thanks to a reorganization of Czechoslovak football, Sigma Olomouc was second class in 1977. Brückner moved to Železárny Prostějov in 1979 and immediately led the team from the third to the second division. There the team was fifth straight away. The good results gave Brückner his first job in the top division in 1981. He finished eleventh with FC Zbrojovka Brno in 1981/82, but had to go during the winter break the following season.
He returned to Olomouc in the summer of 1983. In the meantime, Sigma was promoted to the first division, but was immediately relegated. Brückner was given the task of realizing the immediate resurgence, a project that succeeded in an impressive manner. In the 1984/85 season, the promoted team finished sixth and a year later even fourth, qualifying the team for the UEFA Cup - it was the greatest success in the club's history to date.
After four years, however, Brückner's methods had worn out. In the 1986/87 season, the team was only 14th. Brückner, who did not want to resign voluntarily, was dismissed by the club's management. This was followed by three engagements of only one year each. First as coach of the Czechoslovak U21 team, in 1988/89 with the then second division team ZVL Žilina and in 1989/90 again in the first division with TJ Vítkovice .
In the summer of 1990 Brückner returned to Sigma Olomouc for the second time in his coaching career. He led the team to third place and again in the UEFA Cup. There the team failed in 1991/92 in the quarterfinals against Real Madrid . Third place in the league followed again and again participation in the UEFA Cup.
In September 1993 Brückner's third term in Olomouc came to an end. At the beginning of 1994 he took over Petra Drnovice but had to take his hat off again in October 1994. In the second half of the 1994/95 season he coached the Slovak first division club Inter Bratislava . Then Brückner hired again in Olomouc and led the team to the Czech runner-up in 1995/96. The following season was less successful. In the UEFA Cup came the end in the qualifying round against Hutnik Kraków , in the league, the team finished eighth.
In the summer of 1997, Brückner moved to the Czech Association and looked after the U21 national team for four years. From 1998 he was also assistant to national coach Jozef Chovanec , whom he inherited in 2001.
He became national coach when the Czech team failed to qualify for the 2002 World Cup . Since then, Brückner has not missed a major tournament with the Czech Republic (EM 2004 and EM 2008) and temporarily led the team to 2nd place in the FIFA world rankings . Under him, the Czech Republic took part in a World Cup tournament for the first time since the Czech Football Association was founded ( 2006 World Cup ). Despite the unexpected elimination in the preliminary round, Brückner's contract was extended by the Czech Football Association for another two years to give him the opportunity to lead his team into qualifying for the 2008 European Football Championship . After the elimination in the European Championship preliminary round it became known that Brückner will no longer train the Czech selection in the future.
From summer 2008 to spring 2009 Brückner was team manager of the Austrian national team , but only managed one win and two draws out of four defeats.
After joining the ÖFB team, Brückner ended his coaching career for health reasons.
Karel Brückner's nickname is Klekih-petra ("White Father", a character in a novel by Karl May ) because of his appearance .
