The MŠK Žilina (officially MŠK Žilina, as ) is a sports and football club from the Slovak city of Žilina ( German Sillein ). The MŠK is the most successful football club in the country in the new millennium .
history
The football club was founded on June 20, 1908, then under the Hungarian name Zsolnai Testgyakorlók Köre . Žilina was two Slovak champions between the world wars - in 1928 and 1929. The team was the eleventh best team in Czechoslovakia and played in the first Czechoslovak league in 31 seasons. In the 2001/02, 2002/03, 2003/04, 2006/07, 2009/10 2011/12 and 2016/17 seasons, MŠK Žilina was the Slovak champion . In addition, Žilina reached the group stage of the UEFA Champions League in 2010/11 as the last Slovak team to date .
At the end of March 2020, the club, which had been financially troubled for a long time , filed for bankruptcy due to the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic . The traditional club is the first prominent victim of the corona crisis. The financial strategy is built on the proceeds from player sales. Due to the pandemic, no income is expected in the summer of the year, MŠK Žilina explained on its website. The players wanted to be represented by a representative of the players' union when negotiating a wage waiver (up to 80 percent). In the current crisis, the club rated this as "unfair" and "threatening to exist". The MŠK Žilina decided to part with its professionals, especially those with the higher endowed contracts. However, this also means that the players can leave the club free of charge in the coming transition period. In order to put this on a legally sound basis, a liquidator, equivalent to a German insolvency administrator , was appointed on April 1, 2020 . He will take care of the further processing. The liquidator will u. a. evaluate the club's assets, but also negotiate new contracts with young players. The MŠK Žilina wants to continue its work. "According to Slovak law, an insolvent association can continue to do business, including the continuation of national and international competitions," the association said. MŠK Žilina is in second place after the main round in the 2019/20 season, ten points behind Slovan Bratislava . The following championship round is suspended due to the pandemic. If the season was to continue, it would be played to the end with a youth team.
