Istanbul's Ataturk Olympic Stadium
The 2004/05 UEFA Champions League was the 13th season of the most important European competition for club teams in football under this name and the 50th overall. As in the previous season, 72 clubs from 48 regional associations took part in the competition. The champions from Azerbaijan were back at the start, but no team from Kazakhstan . The season began on July 13, 2004 with the first leg of the first qualifying round and ended on May 25, 2005 with the final in the Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul. Liverpool FC, who took part fourth in the 2003/04 Premier League , won their fifth title in the premier class 3: 3 after extra time and 3: 2 on penalties against AC Milan.
mode
According to the UEFA five-year ranking , two teams each from England, Italy and Spain were seeded for the group stage; two more started in the third qualifying round. Two teams from Germany, France and Greece (places 4-6 in the UEFA five-year ranking) were also seeded for the group stage, but only one team each started in the third qualifying round. A team from the Netherlands, Portugal (including defending champions FC Porto) and Scotland (places 7 - 9) was set for the group stage and one each started in the third qualifying round. The following applied to Turkey: Since FC Porto were both Portuguese champions and Champions League winners in 2003/2004, the champions of the tenth country in the five-year championship Fenerbahçe Istanbul took over the (championship) place from Porto in the group stage and did not have to enter start the 3rd qualifying round. The second Turkish representative started as planned in the second qualifying round. Belgium, Israel, Switzerland, the Czech Republic and the Ukraine (places 11-15) each sent one team to the 2nd and one team each to the 3rd qualifying round.
There was only a minor change to the game mode compared to the previous year. The third-placed teams in the group stage no longer qualified for the third round of the UEFA Cup, as in previous years, but for the round of 32 there . In the group stage, as before, if two teams were tied, the following applies:
- Points from direct games.
- Goal difference from the direct games.
- Away goals in direct games
- Goal difference from all group matches.
- Scored goals in all group matches.
- Higher club coefficient at the beginning of the competition.
qualification
First qualifying round
20 national champions, whose countries were placed under 28th place in the 2003 UEFA ranking , were drawn here and played one home and one away game against each other. The respective winners advanced to the second qualifying round.
The first legs took place on 13./14. July, the second leg will take place on July 21, 2004.
1 This round was deliberately lost by FK Pobeda Prilep to manipulate betting.
Second qualifying round
The 10 winners of the first qualifying round, 12 champions of European leagues, who were placed between 17th and 28th places on the 2003 UEFA ranking list, and 6 teams placed second in the leagues between 10th and 15th were drawn. The teams again played 2 games against each other and the winner advanced to the next qualifying round.
The first legs took place on 27./28. July, the second leg took place on August 4, 2004.
Third qualifying round
The 14 winners from the second qualifying round, 6 champions from European leagues placed between 11-16 places on the 2003 UEFA ranking list, 3 second-placed teams from countries in 7-9 places, 6 third-placed teams from countries 1– 6 and 3 fourth-placed teams from countries 1–3 were drawn together here and again played 2 games against each other. The winners qualified for the group stage and the losers played through to the 2004/05 UEFA Cup first round .
The first legs took place on 10/11. August, the second leg on 24./25. August 2004.
2 The first leg ended 2-1 for Maccabi Tel Aviv, but PAOK Thessaloniki deployed Liasou Louka, who was still suspended from his last European Cup game (for Nea Salamis Famagusta, 4 years ago). UEFA rated the game 3-0 for Maccabi Tel Aviv.
Group stage
The 16 winners of the third qualifying round were drawn together with the champions of the 10 highest-ranked national associations and the second-placed clubs from the countries in first to sixth place in the UEFA five-year ranking in 8 groups of 4 teams each. In each group, the first and second-placed clubs advanced to the round of 16, while the third-placed teams qualified for the round of 32 of the 2004/05 UEFA Cup . The last group dropped out of the European competitions.
