Clarence Clyde Seedorf (born April 1, 1976 in Paramaribo , Suriname ) is a former Dutch soccer player and today's soccer coach . He was champion and cup winner several times in the Netherlands, Spain and Italy and won a. a. four Champions League titles . He is the only player in the history of the competition who has achieved this with three different clubs. Seedorf was the head coach of the Cameroonian national team from August 2018 to July 2019 .
Career as a player
Ajax Amsterdam
As a graduate of the Ajax Amsterdam football school , at the age of 16, he was the youngest player to play his first game in the top Dutch division Eredivisie and quickly established himself as a midfielder in the first team. With Ajax he won until he left after the 1994/95 season a. a. twice in the championship (1994, 1995) and cup competition (1993, 1994) as well as once in the Champions League (1995 Ernst Happel Stadium with a 1-0 win against AC Milan ). In total, he played in the Eredivisie 64 games in which he scored eleven goals.
Sampdoria Genoa
He then played for one season with the Italian first division club Sampdoria Genoa , where he remained without a title.
real Madrid
After a season in Italy and a disappointing European Championship , he moved to Real Madrid in the summer of 1996 for an estimated sum of 15 million DM . In a team with players like Raúl , Fernando Redondo , Predrag Mijatović , Davor Šuker and Roberto Carlos , he took on the role of playmaker. Led by Italian coach Fabio Capello , the team won the Spanish championship in its first year.
In the following season the goal championship was clearly missed under the German coach Jupp Heynckes . Due to Real Madrid's first championship or Champions League title in over 32 years, the season was still a success. With the 1-0 in the final against Juventus Turin , which took place in the stadium of his former club Ajax Amsterdam , Seedorf won his second Champions League title.
In December 1998 he won the World Cup with Real Madrid . From then on, however, his career in Spain was no longer as successful. Inconsistent performances and his insistence on a central midfield position, while the coaches preferred to use him on the wing, led to his departure from Real Madrid after 121 games and 15 goals in the Primera División .
Inter Milan
In January 2000 he moved to Inter Milan in Italy for a transfer sum of 24.5 million euros . In two and a half years he completed 64 first division games and scored eight goals. Similar to his last two years in Madrid, he did not find his way around well in the Milan team. In addition, he was denied a title during this time.
AC Milan
In the 2002/03 season he moved to local rivals AC Milan in exchange for Francesco Coco . There he quickly found his way around and was used by coach Carlo Ancelotti as a regular player in a playful and powerful midfield with Andrea Pirlo and Gennaro Gattuso , who were supposed to support and shield the man behind the tips, mostly the Brazilian Kaká .
In his first year, his new club won the Champions League for the sixth time in the club's history. With the victory on penalties against league rivals Juventus Turin at Manchester United's Old Trafford Stadium , Seedorf is the only player to date to have won the Champions League with three different clubs. The triple was missed due to a drop in performance in Serie A , at least they managed to win the Italian Cup.
In the following season, Seedorf was the key player in the top-class AC Milan team, which won the 17th championship title in club history before AS Roma . In the Champions League, Deportivo La Coruña prevailed in the quarterfinals .
In the 2004/05 season he was runner-up with Milan. After a happy progress in the semi-finals of the Champions League against Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven , the team lost the final in Istanbul against Liverpool FC on penalties.
For the 2006/07 season he took over the jersey with the number 10 of Rui Costa , who after twelve years in Serie A back to Portugal joined. He won the Champions League final against Liverpool 2-1 with Milan in 2007.
After his contract with AC Milan expired at the end of the 2011/12 season , Seedorf left the club.
Botafogo FR
In the summer of 2012, Seedorf moved to Botafogo FR in Brazil. By March 2013 he had scored 13 goals in 33 games.
National team
In the Dutch national football team , Seedorf made 86 appearances and 11 goals. He took part in the 1998 soccer world championship and the 1996 , 2000 and 2004 European championships, in which - with the exception of the European Championship '96 - he reached the semi-finals.
Despite these successes, he is considered controversial among Dutch fans and football experts. He was accused of not appearing with the same zeal as his club teams and that his style of play seemed phlegmatic. Overall, he didn't make the best of his options. A man with these successes would have to show a lot more leadership personality in the national team. For the 2006 World Cup , he was not appointed to the squad by the then Bonds coach Marco van Basten .
In November 2006 Seedorf was called up for the game against England after two years of abstinence as a replacement for Wesley Sneijder , who had been injured at short notice, back into the national team. Shortly before the European Football Championship in 2008 , Seedorf resigned because he had received too little trust from the Bonds coach.
Play style
Clarence Seedorf was considered one of the best playmakers in Europe during his time at AC Milan. His strengths were ball control and his dribbling ability. In addition, he had an above-average overview, so he always found a point of reference. These qualities made it possible for him to get out of almost all situations. His regular position was the central midfield, but he could also play on the wings and right behind a storm or two. Another strength of Seedorf was his standards, so that his corners and free kicks often led directly or indirectly to goals.
