Wesley Sneijder (born June 9, 1984 in Utrecht , Netherlands ) is a former Dutch football player . He is the record player for the Dutch national team , with whom he played 134 international matches between 2003 and 2018 and took part in the 2006 , 2010 and 2014 World Cups and the 2004 , 2008 and 2012 European Championships . In addition, Sneijder won the national championship title in four European leagues.

Career

In the club

Sneijder joined the Ajax Academy at the age of seven, where his older brother Jeffrey trained. Sneijder made his professional league debut with Ajax in a 6-0 away win against Willem II Tilburg on February 2, 2003. He scored his first goal on March 5, 2003 in a 4-1 home win against FC Groningen .

In August 2007, Sneijder moved to the Spanish record champions Real Madrid in the Primera División for 27 million euros , where he signed a contract until 2012. For Ajax Amsterdam this was the highest transfer fee ever collected for a player. At Real Madrid he initially wore the shirt number 23, but after a year he received the playmaker number 10. In the first three league games for Real Sneijder scored four goals and secured a regular place.

In August 2009, Inter Milan signed Sneijder for a transfer fee of around 15 million euros. He signed a four-year contract with Inter and was numbered 10 as in Madrid. On October 3, 2009, he scored his first goal for Inter against Udinese Calcio in the 93rd minute with a 2-1 win at the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium . With Inter, Sneijder won the triple of championship, cup and Champions League in 2010 . In the Champions League final against Bayern Munich , he prepared the 1-0 through Diego Milito . For his achievements Sneijder u. a. awarded UEFA Midfielder of the Year title.

At the end of 2012, Inter Milan wanted to extend Sneijder's contract, but with lower pay. Since Sneijder refused, he was no longer used. On January 22, 2013 he moved to the Süper Lig for Galatasaray Istanbul . His contract with the Turkish first division club ran until June 30, 2018.

Sneijder made his debut for Galatasaray on January 27, 2013 in the derby against Beşiktaş Istanbul , where he came on for Emre Çolak in the second half of the game . The lions won the game 2-1. On May 5, 2013 he celebrated the Turkish championship with Galatasaray. In the 2013/14 season , he shot his club on the last match day against Juventus Turin in a direct duel into the last 16 of the Champions League. The game, which was canceled due to heavy snowfall and had to be continued the next day, he decided in the 85th minute of the game. In addition, Galatasaray won the Turkish Cup against Eskisehirspor on May 7, 2014. Wesley Sneijder scored the only goal. Furthermore, on matchday 19, the Dutchman was the first player to score a hat trick in the Türk Telekom Arena .

In the following season , Sneijder won the 20th championship in the club's history with the "Lions" and took the trophy . The next season Galatasaray finished in a disappointing 6th place, but they could win the Supercup and for the third time in a row the trophy. On July 14, 2017, his contract with Galatasaray Istanbul was terminated prematurely.

In August 2017, Sneijder moved to OGC Nice and in January 2018 to al-Gharafa Sports Club in Qatar .

In August 2019, at the age of 35, Sneijder announced the end of his active career.

In the national team

Sneijder played his first game for the Dutch A-selection on April 30, 2003 against Portugal , before that he had already played for the U21s . As a substitute Sneijder took part in the 2004 European Championships , where he came to two missions.

At the 2006 World Cup he was part of the Dutch team and was also part of the national team at the 2008 European Championship . In the first two group matches against France and Italy he scored one goal each and was named player of the day .

In early June 2010, he was appointed to the squad for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa . There he scored five times: In the preliminary round match against Japan to 1-0, in the round of 16 against Slovakia to 2-0, he scored both goals in the 2-1 quarter-final win against Brazil and the 2-1 lead in the 3: 2 semi-final victory over Uruguay . In the final, the Netherlands had to admit defeat to Spain 0-1. Nevertheless, Sneijder was named Man of the Match in four out of seven games and was awarded the Silver Ball as the second best player and the Bronze Shoe as the third best scorer.

At the EM 2012 , Sneijder was a regular of the Dutch team that had been eliminated from an EM tournament with zero points for the first time. According to the media, Sneijder was the only player in the Netherlands to try to fight the team's bad team spirit and individualism.

On August 14, 2012, Sneijder was appointed captain of the Dutch national team. He succeeded Mark van Bommel , who had resigned after being eliminated in the preliminary round at the EM 2012.

On June 4, 2017, he equaled Edwin van der Sar's record with his 130th international match and outbid him five days later on his 33rd birthday.

After Sneijder made his 133rd international match in November 2017, he announced his retirement from the national team in March 2018. On September 6, 2018, Sneijder said goodbye in a 2-1 friendly win against Peru in his 134th international match from the Elftal .

Play style

Sneijder was considered one of the last real " 10s " in modern football. He could be used in a variety of ways in the central as well as in the left and right midfield . He was particularly characterized by his precise and powerful shot, despite his figure, which is often described as too thin (170 cm, 67 kg). He was also difficult to separate from the ball and regularly surprised with creative and precise passes to the top. Because of his precise long-range shots and free kicks, he was nicknamed Sniper (sniper).

Private

Sneijder has an older brother, Jeffrey Sneijder , who was also a professional footballer. His younger brother Rodney Sneijder (* 1991) last played for Dundee FC .

He was married to Ramona Streekstra from 2005 to 2009. The marriage resulted in a son, to whom he dedicated his tattoo on his left forearm. Sneijder converted from Protestantism to Roman Catholicism in 2010 while in Italy . In the same year he married Yolanthe Cabau van Kasbergen , a Spanish-Dutch actress. On October 15, 2015, Sneijder became a father for the second time.
