The Galatasaray Spor Kulübü (German: Sportklub Galatasaray ), known in German-speaking countries as Galatasaray Istanbul , is a Turkish sports club from the Istanbul district of Beyoğlu , which was founded on October 1, 1905. With 22 Turkish championships , 18 cup wins and 16 Supercups won , it is the most successful football club in Turkey. Galatasaray has been a member of the Süper Lig since 1959 and is second in the all-time table of the Süper Lig, 43 points behind Fenerbahçe Istanbul . Winning the UEFA Cup and the UEFA Super Cup in 2000 are unique for a Turkish team .

In addition to the soccer team, the basketball departments ( men and women ) and the water polo team of Galatasaray are also important. The club also houses many other sports departments: volleyball , swimming , rowing , riding , athletics , bridge , sailing , judo , wheelchair basketball , tennis , chess and, since November 2016, e-sports . In addition, the association has numerous educational institutions and football schools across the country - from kindergartens to universities.

Popularly and by the fans, the team is often called “Aslanlar” (the lions), “Sarı Kırmızılılar” (the yellow and red) or “Cim Bom” (pronunciation: [ dʒɪm ˈbɔm ]), although the origin of the second slogan is not is very clear. In German-speaking countries, the place name “Galatasaray Istanbul” and the abbreviation “Gala” have become established, but they are not used in this form in Turkey.

The club has played its home games since 2011 in the Türk Telekom Stadyumu, which currently holds 52,223 spectators . Before that, from 1964 to 2011, the Ali Sami Yen Stadyumu was the home of the Yellow-Reds .

Similar to the Galatasaray High School , the soccer team also has the quality of being something of a pioneer in Turkish sport. At the beginning of the 20th century, Turkish football, which was still in its infancy, was little more than a loose ball game without any rules. In general, the first football clubs were founded by foreigners, such as the "Kadiköy Football Club" established in 1901, brought to life by the English and Greeks who lived in Constantinople . But only a short time later, the team split into other teams due to several disputes. At first, however, they all had in common the character of associations of minorities who played games among themselves. The spectators at these games included students from the Galatasaray High School, who were disappointed with the course of the games and therefore decided to lay the foundation for their own club.

First President and co-founder Ali Sami Yen formulated the sentence: Our goal is to play together like the English, to have a color and a name and to beat the non-Turkish teams. After an intensive search for a name, an agreement was reached on Galatasaray, which is said to have come up during a game with a Greek club when the audience shouted “Gentlemen of Galatasaray!” After the 2-0 victory of the students . The name Galatasaray translates as the palace of Galata . Galata is a neighborhood in Istanbul's Beyoğlu district .

Since there was still no law in the Ottoman Empire in 1905 that would have made registration possible, it initially remained unofficial. From 1906 Galatasaray played as the first Turkish team in the İstanbul Futbol Ligi . In the 1908/09 season they won their first title there. Official registration took place in 1912 when such a policy was introduced.

Club colors

The first logo with the Arabic letters Ghain and Sīn (until 1923)

In the beginning the club colors were red and white, inspired by the Turkish flag. Since the government was still repressive at the time, it soon became uncomfortable, which is why the colors were changed to a combination of yellow and black. But even this version could not hold up, and so you got the current colors, yellow and red. Ali Sami Yen explains the following: After visiting many places, we came to the shop of Yanko, the fat one, in Bahçekapı and we happened to see fine, two-tone wool. One color was beautiful and dark red and the other was a ripe yellow with hints of orange. The shop owner combined the two dresses with a neat hand movement. A glowing flicker appeared, similar to the gleam that the colourfulness of the head and wings of a goldfinch evokes. It was like watching the play of colors in the fire. We imagined the flames of red and yellow fire over our team and thought it would carry us from victory to victory. And it did.

The years before the founding of the Süper Lig (1905 to 1959)

Galatasaray became the first Turkish soccer team to play a game abroad in September 1911. The crew on the Dacia ferry .

A year after the club was founded, Galatasaray took part in the İstanbul Pazar Ligi (Istanbul Sunday League) for the first time . In the first official game in the club's history, Galatasaray drew 1-1 with the British team HMS Imogene FC . In the five games played, the yellow-reds failed to win. In 1909 Gala won the İstanbul Pazar Ligi for the first time. In the same season, Galatasaray met their city rivals Fenerbahçe Istanbul for the first time . The game ended with two goals from Emin Bülent Serdaroğlu , 2-0. Two years later, Galatasaray became the first Turkish team to play a football match abroad. The opponent was the Hungarian team Klojvar.

Galatasaray won the Sunday League four times. In the 1914/15 season , rival Fenerbahçe was the winner of this season in addition to the yellow-reds . Due to the high number of clubs this season, the league was divided into two championships. As a second championship round, the İstanbul Şampiyonluğu Ligi was added once. The İstanbul Pazar Ligi ended in 1915 and the so-called İstanbul Cuma Ligi (Istanbul Friday League) followed. The İstanbul Cuma Ligi was held for eight years. Due to the occupation of Istanbul , the Friday League did not take place from 1918 to 1920. Galatasaray won the Istanbul Friday League twice.

From 1923 the Istanbul city championship was held as İstanbul Futbol Ligi, until 1951 the yellow-reds were each city champion six times. On November 20, 1925, Gala achieved the highest result in this league competition with a 20-0 win. Five years after the founding of Turkey, the Gazi Büstü Kupası (Gazi Bust Cup) was held in honor of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk . This trophy was the first and only one in Ataturk's lifetime. In this final, Galatasaray faced Fenerbahçe at Taksim Stadium . In the first leg the game ended 3: 3 (1: 3). Billy Hunter's team clearly won the second leg 4-0.

The Türkiye Futbol Şampiyonası ( Turkish Football Championship ), which was the first national league championship in Turkish football, was held from 1924 to 1951. Galatasaray Istanbul couldn't win this competition. The yellow-reds achieved the best result in 1949 as runner-up behind MKE Ankaragücü . In 1937, the Millî Küme , the second national league championship, was founded. Galatasaray won two years later for the first and only time a national championship before the founding of the Süper Lig. Necdet Erdem from Ankara Demirspor , attacked the referee Tarık Özerengin with a punch. Erdem received the red card and the game was declared over in the 78th minute of the game. Galatasaray was named the winner by the Turkish Football Association. In the same season Cemil Erlertürk was together with Hakkı Yeten ( Beşiktaş Istanbul ) top scorer.

The Turkish Football Federation announced the agreement of the Turkish Government on 24 September 1951. Game operation of İstanbul Profesyonel Ligi. Both professional and amateur teams from Istanbul with at least six professional players were eligible to participate. The first season began in January 1952 with a round trip. In the 1954/55 season Gala won the championship before Beşiktaş Istanbul. Ali Beratlıgil was the top scorer with 15 goals and had a large share in the title win. With Metin Oktay from Izmirspor a talented striker was spotted and signed by head coach Gündüz Kılıç at the beginning of the season . In the following season , the title was defended. Oktay was the top scorer in his first season in the yellow-red jersey. The striker was İstanbul Profesyonel Ligi’s top scorer in the following three seasons. Galatasaray won the İstanbul Profesyonel Ligi for the third and last time after the 1957/58 season .

Galatasaray was the first Turkish soccer team to take part in the European Cup in the 1956/57 season. In the preliminary round they met Dinamo Bucharest . The Turks lost the first leg 3-1. In the second leg, Gündüz Kılıç's team won 2-1, but that was not enough. From 1956 to 1958 the Federasyon Kupası was held. The yellow-reds were runner-up behind Beşiktaş Istanbul in both seasons.

1960s

On February 21, 1959, the Millî Lig was founded as Turkey's first professional league. At the beginning only teams from Ankara , Istanbul and Izmir took part. In the first season 16 teams were divided into two groups, Galatasaray took part in the red group . Under the Italian Leandro Remondini , the team achieved seven wins, six draws and one defeat and qualified as group winners for the final. The opponent in the final for the championship was city rival Fenerbahçe Istanbul . In the first leg, Galatasaray won the game 1-0 with a goal from Metin Oktay . The second leg was lost to Fenerbahçe 4-0 through goals from Yüksel Gündüz , Mustafa Güven , Naci Erdem and Şeref Has . Fenerbahçe became the first Turkish football champion. This season Metin Oktay became the first top scorer in the new Turkish football league with 13 goals. In the 1959/60 season Cimbom was third in the table and Oktay was again top scorer with 33 goals. On the 9th matchday Galatasaray won 8-0 in front of their home crowd against Altınordu Izmir , it is Galatasaray's highest win in the Süper Lig to date. In 38 games Galatasaray scored 27 wins, 6 draws and lost five times and was again one point behind behind Fenerbahçe runner-up. In 1961 Gündüz Kılıç , called Baba Gündüz among the gala fans, was hired as the new head coach. On July 10, 1961 Oktay left Galatasaray and moved to Italy to US Palermo, his coach there was Leandro Remondini. Thus, after Şükrü Gülesin , Bülent Esel , Bülent Eken and Lefter Küçükandonyadis , Oktay was the fifth Turkish football player to be hired in Italy. Despite this gap in attack, the team under coach Gündüz Kılıç and assistant coach Coşkun Özarı became Turkish champions for the first time at the end of the season . In addition, the team qualified for the second time after 1956 for the European Cup .

Metin Oktay was the top scorer six times in the Süper Lig.

At the beginning of the 1962/63 season, Metin Oktay returned after just one year. In addition to the return of the striker, the Turkish football cup was introduced this season and the European championship took part. Furthermore, the statutes were changed for this Milli-Lig season. The league was divided into two groups of eleven teams, the six best of both groups played in the championship round for the championship. Galatasaray as defending champion qualified as group winners for the championship round and was again champions before Beşiktaş at the end of the season. In addition to winning the championship, the team celebrated winning the Turkish Cup. The team of Kılıç defeated Fenerbahçe in the final in the first and second leg with 2-1 each. Participation in the European Champions Cup was also positive. The yellow-reds made it to the quarter-finals and were eliminated against the winner AC Milan . On the 15th match day of the 1963/64 season Coşkun Özarı was head coach for the second time at Gala . In the European Champions Cup they were eliminated in the first round. In the playoff against FC Zurich , the toss of the coin had to determine the winner after extra time, and this was FC Zurich. The championship title could not be defended this season. In the end, Galatasaray was 11 points behind Fenerbahçe and finished third in the table, but the Turkish Cup was won again and the club qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup for the first time .

The 1964/65 season began with Özarı, but he was dismissed after three league games and two games in the European Cup Winners' Cup against SC Aufbau Magdeburg (today 1. FC Magdeburg) due to the commitment of Gündüz Kılıç. Galatasaray played 1-1 in both the first and second leg, a playoff had to take place on neutral ground. Vienna was chosen as the venue . The game ended a third time with 1: 1 in the Hohe Warte stadium . The decision was made by tossing a coin, which Galatasaray won. In the next round you met Legia Warsaw , where the Turks were eliminated. From 1965 to 1968 Galatasaray was runner-up in the championship once (1966) and third three times. At the end of the 1966/67 season, Gündüz Kılıç Galatasaray left, his successor was Bülent Eken . The cup was won in 1965 and 1966. The championship race of the 1968/69 season was held between Galatasaray and Eskişehirspor . On March 16, 1969, the teams met at the Ali Sami Yen Stadium . Eskişehirspor started the game offensively and found two goals in minutes 22nd and 25th through Nihat Atacan . Galatasaray went into the half-time break 2-0 down. Atılay Özgür came on as a substitute for the second half and scored 2-1 against his former employer immediately after the restart. It was his first and only goal for the red and yellow . Metin Oktay scored 2-2 with a penalty in the 49th minute and the game ended with this result.

On the last day of the match, the Red-Yellows had to go to Ankara to go to Şekerspor . Eskişehirspor also played away against Mersin İdman Yurdu . Before this match day, Galatasaray led the table by one point. Galatasaray defeated Şekerspor 2-1, Eskişehirspor lost to Mersin Idman Yurdu 2-0. Galatasaray became Turkish champions for the third time. Metin Oktay was the top scorer with 17 goals for the last time in his career and retired from his active career. The head coach of the championship team was Tomislav Kaloperović .

1970s

The 1970s did not start well for Galatasaray Istanbul nationally. The reigning champions of the Turkish league finished eighth in the 1969/70 season. In the Turkish Cup they were eliminated in the quarter-finals against Eskişehirspor , and in the European Cup , the Turkish team made it to the quarter-finals for the second time in the club's history. She was eliminated by Legia Warsaw because Galatasaray suffered a 1-1 defeat in Istanbul and a 2-0 defeat in Poland. The team's top scorer was Gökmen Özdenak with 11 goals. In the 1970/71 season Galatasaray celebrated its 4th championship title at the end of the season. Brian Birch's team finished first by one point ahead of city rivals Fenerbahçe Istanbul . The decision for the championship title was made on the last day of the match. Fenerbahçe won their last game at home against Beşiktaş Istanbul 1-0. Galatasaray, on the other hand, won 7-1 against PTT in Ankara . Fenerbahçe fans incorrectly received the information on the radio that PTT would lead 1-0 against Galatasaray, but this was not true. As in the previous season, Galatasaray was eliminated in the Turkish Cup in the quarter-finals against Eskişehirspor.

The club ended the 1971/72 season again in 1st place and became Turkish champions for the fifth time, but they were again unsuccessful in the cup competitions. In the European Cup against CSKA Moscow it was already over after the first round, and in the Turkish Cup the quarter-finals were the end point for the third time in a row. In 1973 the title hat trick was completed. For the first time in the history of the Süper Lig , a club won the championship title three times in a row. Brian Birch was the first coach to do this. The double was also achieved in the season. In the Turkish Cup final they won against MKE Ankaragücü in the first leg 3-1, and in the second leg the yellow-reds drew 1-1. In the cup of national champions came against FC Bayern Munich, the early end. The game ended 1-1 in the first leg in Turkey. In Munich's Olympic Stadium there was a clear 0: 6 defeat. Gerd Müller (twice), Uli Hoeneß , Franz Beckenbauer , Edgar Schneider and Franz Roth scored for Bayern.

The 1973/74 season was disappointing for Gala . The season ended in 5th place and was therefore not qualified for the European competitions for the coming season. Fenerbahçe were eliminated in the semi-finals of the Cup, and the first round of the Cup against Atlético Madrid ended early. In the summer of 1974, Galatasaray separated from Birch and hired Jack Mansell as the new coach . In the 1974/75 season Galatasaray was runner-up behind Fenerbahçe Istanbul and secured qualification for the UEFA Cup for the first time . In the cup, the team flew out against Boluspor in the quarter-finals. After the season, Mansell was fired. He was succeeded by Fethi Demircan . Demircan was fired after three match days in the following season. Don Howe succeeded him. Howe was also sacked after two goalless draws and replaced by his previously fired predecessor. In the 1975/76 season you could not win the championship title, but the team managed to bring the Turkish Cup to Istanbul. In the first leg of the final Trabzonspor won 1-0 and in the second leg in Istanbul there was also a 1-0 victory thanks to a goal from Bülent Ünder , this time for Galatasaray. There was a penalty shoot-out, which Galatasaray won. Galatasaray won the Turkish Cup for the sixth time. During this season, Fatih Terim played his first season as a player for Galatasaray. In the UEFA Cup they were eliminated in the 2nd round against Torpedo Moscow , before they defeated Rapid Vienna .

The 1976/77 season was unsuccessful, they finished fifth in the league, the Cup ended in the quarter-finals against Orduspor , and in the European Cup Winners' Cup they were 5-1 in the second round against RSC Anderlecht, both in the first and second leg outclassed. Malcolm Allison was the head coach of the 1976/77 season . 1978 ended the season in 3rd place; thus participation for the UEFA Cup was secured. Coşkun Özarı returned to the Gala coaching chair one more time . In the 1978/79 season Galatasaray was runner -up behind Trabzonspor for the sixth time in league history . In the Turkish Cup they were surprisingly eliminated against MKE Kırıkkalespor in the 5th round. The UEFA Cup ended prematurely in the first round against West Bromwich Albion .

1980s

From August 25, 1979, Turkish teams were banned from signing foreign players. Galatasaray Istanbul ended its first season in the 1980s with a 9th place, this season three coaches Coşkun Özarı , Turgay Şeren and Tamer Kaptan were terminated within one season. For the 80/81 season, Brian Birch , a foreign coach, took command again. With him, the team was third in the following season and won the trophy of the Turkish Sports Journalists Association . After two years, the transfer ban for foreign players was lifted. Galatasaray then signed the Yugoslav players Tarik Hodžić and Mirsad Sejdić . In addition, Raşit Çetiner was signed by Fenerbahçe Istanbul, in return Erdoğan Arıca moved to the yellow-blue . Birch's tenure came to an end after ten games in the 81/82 season. Günay Kayarlar took over the team for two games. Özkan Sümer was his successor, and he finished the season with his team in 11th place. Despite the poor placement in the league, they won the cup and the President's Cup in the same year .

In the next two seasons 82/83 and 83/84, the yellow-reds won no trophy. On December 10, 1983, the spectators at Ali Sami Yen Stadyumu saw the league game with the highest number of goals in Galatasaray. Gala defeated Adana Demirspor 9-2. Head coach during the 83/84 season was Tomislav Ivić with Mustafa Denizli , an experienced and at the same time dangerous striker moved from Altay İzmir to Galatasaray. Denizli was seriously injured during the season, which is why he only came to 15 missions and scored three goals. His first season for Galatasaray was also the last of his playing career. His strike partner Hodžić was top scorer with 16 goals. He was the first foreign player to receive this award.

Galatasaray won the championship again for the first time in 14 years with Jupp Derwall.

For the season 84/85 Galatasaray signed Jupp Derwall . Derwall should make the traditional club the champions again. He also revolutionized the club, before his commitment he had conditions: there should be a grass field on the training ground and the board should invest money in youth work. With his move, Derwall brought Rüdiger Abramczik and Erdal Keser from Germany to the team. In addition, Yusuf Altıntaş and Semih Yuvakuran, two talented Turkish players and Zoran Simović, an experienced goalkeeper, joined the team. In its first year, the team finished sixth, but the team won a cup and a Prime Minister's Cup . Fatih Terim ended his active career at the end of the season at the age of 31.

Before the 1985/86 season, Galatasaray was again active on the transfer market. Istanbul club brought Cevat Prekazi from Hajduk Split . It was followed by Arif Kocabıyık from Fenerbahçe and Erhan Önal from Standard Liège . Before the 1976/77 season, Önal was promoted to the professional squad as a FC Bayern Munich player and thus - as the first migrant child of Turkish descent - to the Bundesliga . The 85/86 season ended Galatasaray without defeat, this performance was still not enough for the championship title. Beşiktaş Istanbul also had 56 points like Galatasaray, but the better goal difference and Gala was tied with the champions runner-up.

In the summer of 1986, Bülent Korkmaz , Suat Kaya , Muhammed Altıntaş and Uğur Tütüneker joined the team . Erdal Keser, however, left Gala and returned to Borussia Dortmund . In the UEFA Cup, Galatasaray was eliminated in the first round against the Romanian club FC Universitatea Craiova . With three game days before the end of the season, Beşiktaş Istanbul led the table with a point lead of two points over Galatasaray. Beşiktaş unexpectedly lost 1-0 away to Malatyaspor , while the yellow-reds won their game against Kocaelispor 2-1. So both teams were tied. A week later, Beşiktaş lost another point. Against the outsider Denizlispor only managed a 1-1 draw. In the 85th minute, Denizlispor's Erol Tolga scored the late equalizer with a direct free kick. Galatasaray won 3-1 away against Antalyaspor and were one point ahead of the table. On June 7, 1987, the last game day took place, both teams were victorious and Galatasaray became Turkish champions after 14 years. After winning the championship, Jupp Derwall quit his job as head coach of Galatasaray and became team manager of the club, his successor being his assistant coach Mustafa Denizli.

For the new 1987/88 season came the French Didier Six and the talented striker Tanju Çolak . With Tugay Kerimoğlu a youth player was pulled up into the 1st team. After many years Galatasaray returned to the European Cup and met the Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven in the first round . In the first leg, the Turks lost 3-0 away so the 2-0 win in the second leg is not enough. With Denizli, the team was able to defend the championship with ease. The team lost two of their 38 league games. The point lead was 12 points in the end. Tanju Çolak sets a new goalscorer record with 39 goals.

The line-up against Neuchâtel Xamax

In the 1988/89 season Galatasaray was the only Turkish team to date in the European Cup of National Champions in the semifinals. The spectacular entry into the quarter-finals will not be forgotten for all fans. In the last sixteen, the club met the Swiss club Neuchâtel Xamax . The first leg in Switzerland was lost 3-0. The impossible happened on November 9, 1988 at the second leg in Istanbul, where the Swiss were beaten 5-0 and thus made it to the quarter-finals. In the quarter-finals, the Istanbul team met French champions AS Monaco . The Monegasque was a big favorite with stars like George Weah . Completely surprising, however, the Turks won the first leg at Stade Louis II 1-0 after a header from Tanju Çolak, which was set up by a cross from Cevat Prekazi. As a result, the hosts gave up countless chances and failed to goalkeeper Zoran Simović. The second leg was played in Cologne due to a penalty imposed on Galatasaray . In Monaco there was joy at not having to go to the "hell" of the Ali-Sami-Yen Stadium - but nobody suspected that the atmosphere in Cologne was almost even more euphoric. The second leg ended with a 1-1 draw. In the semifinals they then failed at the later second Steaua Bucharest with 1: 1 and 1: 4.

In the league, Galatasaray was third and in the cup they were eliminated in the quarter-finals against Fenerbahçe.

1990s

After the 1988/89 season Denizli left Galatasaray and was coach of Alemannia Aachen . The new head coach of Gala was Sigfried Held . In the UEFA Cup, the yellow-reds had to play against FK Roter Stern Belgrade in the first round . In the first leg in front of a home crowd, the teams parted with a 1-1 draw. In the second leg, Held's team lost 2-0 and was therefore out of the competition. The season ended in 4th place and in the Turkish Cup they were eliminated in the round of 16. Held resigned as head coach, his successor was his predecessor Mustafa Denizli. With him the success returned, Galatasaray was runner-up behind Beşiktaş Istanbul and Turkish cup winner.

Before the beginning of the 1991/92 season, Galatasaray had to cope with important departures, so Tanju Çolak moved to city rivals Fenerbahçe Istanbul and midfielder Prekazi to Altay Izmir. In return, Dominic Iorfa , Frank Berghuis , Selçuk Yula and Hamza Hamzaoğlu moved to Galatasaray. The new players could not fill the gap that had arisen. They finished third in the league and the quarter-finals of the Turkish Cup ended. However, her best result was in the European Cup Winners' Cup. In the quarter-finals, the yellow-reds were eliminated from eventual cup winners Werder Bremen . In the Weserstadion Galatasaray lost 2-1, in the second leg the encounter ended 0-0 draw. Denizli resigned after the season. In the summer of 1992 there was a change in the team at Galatasaray, so Elvir Bolić , Suat Kaya, Okan Buruk , Reinhard Stumpf and Falko Götz were brought in. The club also signed a 20-year-old striker, his name was Hakan Şükür . Iosif Rotariu and Roman Kosecki left Galatasaray. The team's new coach was Karl-Heinz Feldkamp , Feldkamp built a new team, and players like Bülent Korkmaz, Tugay Kerimoğlu, Arif Erdem, Okan Buruk and Hakan Şükür became regular players. On December 5, 1992, Galatasaray met Beşiktaş. Galatasaray defeated the black and white 3-1 and ended their record of 48 unbeaten games. The decision for the championship was again between Galatasaray and Beşiktaş. Galatasaray won 8-0 against MKE Ankaragücü on the last day of the match and Beşiktaş also won, but the goal difference was in Gala's favor , which made Feldkamp and his team the Turkish champions. Both teams met in the Turkish Cup final a month earlier. Galatasaray was a cup winner.

Feldkamp resigned as head coach for health reasons, but stayed with the club and became team manager. His successor was his assistant coach Reiner Hollmann . Hakan Ünsal , Kubilay Türkyılmaz and Ergün Penbe were among the newcomers. In the 1993/94 season, Galatasaray became the first Turkish team to enter the group stage of the UEFA Champions League. In the first round they defeated Cork City in the return leg , in the last round before the group stage the opponent was Manchester United . In the first leg at Old Trafford , the English led 2-0 after 13 minutes of play. The goals of Arif Erdem and Kubilay Türkyılmaz made it 2-2 after 31 minutes. In the 63rd minute, Türkyılmaz scored again and Galatasaray took the lead until Éric Cantona scored to equalize nine minutes before the end of normal time. The result stayed the same and Galatasaray managed to play a 0-0 draw at Ali Sami Yen Stadyumu . Thus Galatasaray was qualified for the group stage. The group played against FC Barcelona , AS Monaco and Spartak Moscow . In six games Gala played two draws and lost the remaining games. Hollmann became champion with Gala in the 1993/94 season. It was the 10th championship title for the club. Hollmann left Istanbul after one season. Reinhard Saftig became the new head coach of Galatasaray Istanbul. Players like Falko Götz, Reinhard Stumpf, Yusuf Altıntaş and Roger Ljung left the team. Erdal Keser ended his career. As in the previous season, Gala qualified for the UEFA Champions League group stage. The Turkish team was in a group with Manchester United, FC Barcelona and IFK Göteborg . In six games Galatasaray managed a win and a draw. The remaining four games were lost. The first victory in the group stage came on November 23, 1994 against FC Barcelona. The yellow-reds won 2-1 in Istanbul through goals from Hakan Şükür and Arif Erdem. The season 94/95 ended in 3rd place. In the Turkish Cup they lost in the final against Trabzonspor. Reinhard Saftig was released in March 1995 and Müfit Erkasap was responsible for the team for the rest of the season .

Graeme Souness from Scotland was introduced as the new coach in the summer of 1995. At his request, Dean Saunders , Mike Marsh and Brad Friedel were brought in. In the UEFA Cup they were eliminated after the first round. Galatasaray lost in the first leg away to Sparta Prague 3-1 and scored a 1-1 draw in the second leg. In the Turkish championship, the team was fourth with 68 points. However, she won the Turkish Cup. After beating Fenerbahçe Istanbul in the final of the Turkish Cup, Souness placed a Galatasaray flag in the middle of the field of the Fenerbahçe Stadium, provoking the opposing fans. Since this campaign, the Scot has enjoyed hero status with Galatasaray fans.

Gheorghe Hagi was signed before the 1996/97 season and is the highest-scoring foreign player in the club's history.

Despite the cup success from the previous season, Graeme Sounes and Galatasaray parted ways. He was succeeded by the former captain and sweeper of Gala Fatih Terim. Besides him, Ümit Davala , Vedat İnceefe and Adrian Knup joined the team . Alp Küçükvardar and Emre Belözoğlu were brought into the first team from their own youth . Galatasaray managed a transfer coup with the commitment of the Romanian Gheorghe Hagi . The Carpathian Maradona , known by fans , moved to Istanbul on July 31, 1996. As the reigning cup winners, the team from Istanbul took part in the European Cup Winners' Cup. In the second round they met Paris Saint-Germain . In the first leg, Galatasaray won the game 4-2. Two weeks later they lost 4-0 and were eliminated. During the winter break, Galatasaray strengthened itself with the newcomers Iulian Filipescu and Adrian Ilie . On February 9, 1997, Galatasaray lost the city derby against Fenerbahçe Istanbul, this defeat should be the last of the season. There were 11 wins and two draws. With this performance Galatasaray was eight points ahead of Beşiktaş Istanbul Turkish champions.

Gheorghe Popescu was the most notable addition before the 1997/98 season. At the start of the season, Galatasaray qualified for the group stage of the UEFA Champions League. They defeated FC Sion 4-1 in both the first and second leg. The yellow-reds finished the group stage in last place. In the Turkish Cup they lost the final 4-2 on penalties against Beşiktaş Istanbul. The reigning champion was able to defend the Turkish championship. On the penultimate match day Fenerbahçe played a draw against Şekerspor and Galatasaray won against Istanbulspor at the same time and became champions early.

After the 1998 World Cup in France , Brazilian goalkeeper Cláudio Taffarel moved from Atlético Mineiro to Galatasaray Istanbul. In the 1998/99 season Galatasaray achieved his best result in the Champions League. Both Gala and Juventus Turin and Rosenborg Trondheim had eight points. The Italians won one game and drew the remaining five games. Due to the best goal difference, Juventus advanced one round as group winners. In the championship Galatasaray achieved the third title in a row. As in the previous year, they met Beşiktaş again in the cup. In the first leg in front of their own audience, the game ended goalless. Galatasaray won the second leg with two goals from Ümit Davala and won the Turkish Cup. For Fatih Terim it was the first cup win as a coach.

2000s

The historically most difficult season 1999/2000 began for the Turks after the third national championship title in a row in the Champions League in a group with Hertha BSC , FC Chelsea and AC Milan . Four points had been won after five matchdays, the last game for a place in the UEFA Cup took place at the Ali Sami Yen Stadium against the Milanese, who were in the better position in the table and therefore had to be defeated. In an exciting match that Galatasaray had to turn twice, Cimbom won 3-2 with a penalty from Ümit Davala in stoppage time. In the third round of the UEFA Cup, FC Bologna were drawn as opponents (1-1 (A), 2-1 (H)), followed by Borussia Dortmund (2-0 (A), 0-0 (H)) , Real Mallorca (4: 1 (A), 2: 1 (H)) and Leeds United (2: 0 (H), 2: 2 (A)).

Handover of the UEFA Cup to captain Bülent Korkmaz and Hakan Şükür .

The final took place in the Parken Stadium in Copenhagen on May 17th, 2000, the final opponent was Arsenal FC . Both sides found their way into the game, even if it was very tactical, the Turks in particular had good chances through Hakan Şükür and Arif Erdem , on the other hand Marc Overmars and Thierry Henry were dangerous. After 90 minutes it was 0-0, so that extra time had to serve. Right at the beginning there was the first big shock for Galatasaray with the red card for playmaker Gheorghe Hagi , the game had to be played with a minority. But this was followed by an even bigger one when Henry headed the ball into the goal completely free-standing, which was saved from the line by goalkeeper Cláudio Taffarel . The Brazilian goalkeeper injured himself during the maneuver, but at the same time became the man of the game. When it was still a draw after 120 minutes, the penalty shoot-out followed, in which both Davor Šuker and captain Patrick Vieira missed on the English side and all the shooters scored on the Turkish side. The penalty shoot-out ended with a 4: 1 for Galatasaray and the first European Cup triumph in the club's history was thus wrapped up.

The team line-up in the Supercup final.

Before the start of the 2000/01 season , Mircea Lucescu took over the team. Fatih Terim left Galatasaray and henceforth coached Fiorentina . The success of the past season was a career boost for strikers Hakan Şükür and Arif Erdem , both of whom moved abroad. Şükür moved to Italy to Inter Milan and Erdem went to Spain to Real Sociedad . Galatasaray Istanbul signed Mário Jardel (16 million euros transfer fee), a new striker and at the same time the most expensive player in the club's history. In August they met the Champions League winner Real Madrid at the Stade Louis II in Monaco as part of the game for the UEFA Super Cup . Initially, the Turks took the lead with a penalty, which was used by new signing Mario Jardel, but the Spaniards equalized shortly before the end with a penalty from Raúl . After the end of regular time, the game went into overtime, in which Jardel lived up to his reputation as a "real scare" when he scored the 2-1 ( golden goal ) after a cross from Fatih Akyel and his new employer the second international Trophy. As the season progressed, Galatasaray faced Real Madrid again. This time in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League. Galatasaray won their home game at Ali Sami Yen 3-2, but the Turks lost 3-0 at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu . The 2000/01 season ended without a title for Galatasaray. In the league they were runner-up in the Turkish Cup, they were eliminated in the semifinals. At the end of the season, Ümit Davala , Hakan Ünsal , Okan Buruk , Emre Belözoğlu , Mário Jardel, Gheorghe Popescu and Cláudio Taffarel all left Galatasaray and continued to play abroad. The playmaker Gheorghe Hagi ended his active career.

For the 2001/02 season, Gala signed Ümit Karan , Faryd Mondragón , Berkant Göktan and Ayhan Akman, among others . As runner-up, Galatasaray had to start the UEFA Champions League in the second qualifying round. There the yellow-reds met KS Vllaznia Shkodra . The Turks won 2-0 in the first leg and 4-1 in the second leg. Levski Sofia was the opponent in the third qualifying round . Galatasaray won in the home game, in front of their own crowd, 2-1 and in the second leg a 1-1 draw was enough and qualified for the first group stage. Coach Lucescu's team finished second behind FC Nantes . In the second group stage, his group faced AS Roma , FC Barcelona and FC Liverpool . With one defeat and five draws, the team was bottom of the group. During the winter break, at Lucescu's request, Jersson González and Radu Niculescu were signed . In return, Mbo Mpenza , Pavel Horváth , Robert Špehar , Richard Kingson , Alper Tezcan , Rasim Vardar , Ufuk Talay and Erhan Namlı left the club. Galatasaray won the championship with a three-point advantage over Fenerbahçe. Arif Erdem and İlhan Mansız from Beşiktaş Istanbul were top scorer with 21 goals. In the Turkish Cup, Galatasaray was eliminated in the third main round after a golden goal against Erzurumspor .

Despite winning a championship, Lucescu was sacked to make way for Fatih Terim . Lucescu signed after his dismissal with city rivals Beşiktaş Istanbul . According to Terim's demand, the following players were signed: Sergio Almaguer , Christian , Mohamed Sarr , Felipe , Hakan Ünsal , Ümit Davala , Mehmet Polat , Cihan Haspolatlı , Fábio Pinto , Elvir Baljić , Abel Xavier , Suat Usta , Volkan Arslan , Haim Revivo , Ali Lukunku , Aykut Erçetin and Klodian Duro . The Champions League ended for the yellow-reds after the first group stage and in the Turkish Cup they were eliminated in the quarter-finals after a 1: 2 defeat against Malatyaspor . The race for the championship ended on the penultimate matchday in a direct duel between Gala and Beşiktaş Istanbul. Beşiktaş won the game with a goal from Sergen Yalçın and became champions. Galatasaray finished runner-up with 77 points.

Hakan Şükür returned to the Bosporus for the 2003/04 season . In summer 2003, the yellow-reds defeated CSKA Sofia in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League and qualified for the group stage. The group played against Juventus Turin , Real Sociedad San Sebastián and Olympiacos Piraeus . Gala and Juventus met on December 2, 2003 in Dortmund's Westfalenstadion , as the Italians had requested this after the terrorist attacks that had taken place in Istanbul . Galatasaray finished third after the group matches and secured participation in the third round of the UEFA Cup. In the first leg, there was a 2-2 draw in Ali-Sami-Yen against Villarreal . The second leg ended 3-0 for the Spanish team. In the championship they were after the first half of the season in 5th place and 14 points far from leaders Beşiktaş. The Turkish Cup already ended for Cimbom in the round of 16 against Çaykur Rizespor . The yellow-reds lost 0: 5. On March 20, 2004, the team played against Rizespor, as in the Cup, Galatasaray lost the game 2-1 and Fatih Terim resigned as head coach. Former Galatasaray midfielder Gheorghe Hagi took over the position of head coach three years after retiring. The season ended in 6th place.

Winning the championship was particularly important for the club this season because it was 100 years old and Beşiktaş (founded in 1903) succeeded in 2003. Gala wanted to follow suit. In the summer of 2004, the squad was strengthened with the transfers of Rigobert Song , Stjepan Tomas , Flávio Conceição and Alioum Saidou . In addition, Arda Turan , Uğur Uçar , Zafer Şakar and Mülayim Erdem were appointed to the first team from the youth . During the winter break, two more players were brought in, Hasan Kabze and Hakan Yakin . On the last day of the winter transfer period, Franck Ribéry , unknown to many fans, was loaned out. Ribéry drew attention in the league, especially in the Turkish Cup final against arch rivals Fenerbahçe Istanbul. With one goal and one assist, the left midfielder played a major role in the 5-1 win over the blue and yellow . The other goals scored Necati Ateş and Hakan Şükür. Galatasaray withdrew the purchase option negotiated with FC Metz for Ribéry. Due to the financial problems Galatasaray could not pay their players their salaries. Ribéry dissolved his contract with Galatasaray and moved to Olympique Marseille . Galatasaray could not win the championship despite the new players and ended up third. Hagi resigned as a coach due to problems between him and the board.

Eric Gerets took over the troupe before the start of the 2005/06 season. The season started disappointingly for coach Gerets. In the UEFA Cup they were eliminated early in the first round against the Norwegian outsider Tromsø IL . The yellow-reds lost 1-0 away in the first leg and the match ended 1-1 at the Ali-Sami-Yen Stadium at home. This season there was a neck-and-neck race against city rivals Fenerbahçe at national level. In the cup, the Lions were eliminated from Fenerbahçe in the semi-finals. The championship was decided on the last day of the match. Galatasaray received Kayserispor in Istanbul and at the same time Fenerbahçe played away against Denizlispor . Galatasaray defeated Kayserispor 3-0 and had to wait 16 minutes for the game between Denizlispor and Fenerbahçe to end, the game in Denizli ended 1-1. Gerets and his players became Turkish champions and it was the first championship title in four years.

Gala signed Jun'ichi Inamoto from West Bromwich Albion for the new season . With Inamoto, a Japanese football player played in the Süper Lig for the first time . Mehmet Topal , Marcelo Carrusca and Okan Buruk came as further newcomers . Buruk returned to Galatasaray after five years. As the reigning champion, Galatasaray competed for the first time in the new Turkish Football Supercup against the cup winner Beşiktaş Istanbul. This competition was held from 1966 to 1998 under the name Cumhurbaşkanlıği Kupası (German: President's Cup) . The Lions lost the game in the Commerzbank Arena against Beşiktaş 1-0. In the Champions League, the Turkish team was bottom of the group. The Turkish Cup came to an end for Cim Bom in the quarter-finals. Away the game against Kayseri Erciyesspor ended 0-0 and in front of a home crowd the game ended 1-1 in favor of Erciyesspor after extra time. Last year's champions finished the season in third place behind local rivals Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş. Eric Gerets announced his retirement immediately after the last day of the season.

Galatasaray decided to renew the squad and brought an experienced coach back to Galatasaray in Karl-Heinz Feldkamp . Feldkamp should integrate new young players into the team. Galatasaray brought internationally famous players such as Lincoln from FC Schalke 04 , Shabani Nonda and Tobias Linderoth to Istanbul this season . There were also Turkish players from Germany in the Feldkamp-Elf: Barış Özbek , Serkan Çalık both from Rot-Weiss Essen and Volkan Yaman and Hakan Balta . With the mixture of old and young, Galatasaray became champions, but without Feldkamp. Feldkamp quit his job as a coach six game days before the end of the championship. His assistant coach Cevat Güler took over the last six games . During this season, the long-awaited start of construction on the new Galatasaray arena. The Türk Telekom Arena became the new stadium of the traditional club from the 2010/11 season. Hakan Şükür ended his career at the end of the season. In the UEFA Cup, before the group stage, NK Slaven Belupo Koprivnica and FC Sion were defeated. In the group stage that followed, Galatasaray faced Girondins Bordeaux , Helsingborgs IF , Panionios Athens and Austria Wien . With third place they qualified for the next round and were eliminated by Bayer 04 Leverkusen . On April 1, 2008, Karl-Heinz Feldkamp unexpectedly resigned as head coach. One of the reasons was that Feldkamp and the board had different opinions. Cevat Güler took over the team for the last six match days and became Turkish champions with him. Team captain Hakan Şükür ended his career after 20 years.

The Turkish record champions continued to rely on German virtues and signed Michael Skibbe , who had previously been sacked at Bayer 04 Leverkusen. Skibbe himself was responsible for Galatasaray's elimination from the UEFA Cup the previous season. His team defeated the Turks 5-1 in the BayArena . Galatasaray signed well-known players such as Milan Baroš , Harry Kewell and Fernando Meira this season . The commitments of Baroš and Kewell aroused high expectations among the fans. Before the start of the season, the team won the Turkish Supercup for the first time in the club's history . In the third qualifying round of the Champions League, the reigning champions were eliminated by Steaua Bucharest and took part in the first round of the UEFA Cup . There the red-yellow defeated AC Bellinzona and met in the group stage against Metalist Charkiw , Olympiacos , Hertha BSC and Benfica Lisbon . At the end of November Karl-Heinz Feldkamp unexpectedly returned. Kalli didn't come back as a trainer, but as a technical director. On February 23, 2009 Skibbe was dismissed, a 2-5 home defeat against Kocaelispor was the trigger. One day after the game and Skibbe's dismissal, Bülent Korkmaz was already in place. Korkmaz could no longer save the season; in the UEFA Cup they were eliminated against Hamburger SV (1: 1/2: 3). Previously they defeated Girondins Bordeaux in the round of 16. In the championship they finished fifth and in the Turkish Cup Gala was eliminated in the quarterfinals against Sivasspor .

2010s

Bülent Korkmaz quit his job as a trainer, he was succeeded by Frank Rijkaard . He was the first Dutch coach in the club's history. New names have also been signed for the squad: Elano , Leo Franco and Abdul Kader Keïta . The Lions finished the first half of the season one point behind Fenerbahçe in 2nd place. Nevertheless, equipment was upgraded during the winter transfer period, with Giovani dos Santos , and the captain of the Australian national soccer team Lucas Neill moving to Istanbul. Despite signing Rijkaard and Johan Neeskens as assistant coaches, Galatasaray finished third in the championship behind Bursaspor and Fenerbahçe Istanbul. In the UEFA Europa League , Galatasaray was eliminated in the round of 32 against eventual winner Atlético Madrid and in the Turkish Cup, Gala was knocked out in the quarter-finals against Antalyaspor .

Gala signed nine players during the summer transfer period . In return, Mehmet Topal , Leo Franco , Emre Güngör , Uğur Uçar , Caner Erkin , Giovani dos Santos, Jô and Keita left the team. Before that, Galatasaray was eliminated early on against Karpaty Lviv from the UEFA Europa League. After a 2-4 home defeat against MKE Ankaragücü , the club drew consequences. Frank Rijkaard and his assistant coach Johan Neeskens were sacked. Rijkaard's successor was former playmaker Galatasarays Gheorghe Hagi . Hagi took over the coaching position for the second time. Four days earlier, the last game against Beypazarı Şekerspor was played at the Ali Sami Yen Stadium . The first derby in the new stadium against Fenerbahçe took place on matchday 26. The blue and yellow won the game 2: 1. After this defeat, Gheorghe Hagi's contract was terminated. During his tenure, the team fell in the Süper Lig to 11th place and was eliminated in the Turkish Cup in the quarter-finals. Bülent Ünder took over the post of head coach until the end of the season. Ünder himself was a player from 1969 to 1978 and from 1996 to 2000 assistant coach of Fatih Terim at Galatasaray Istanbul. Galatasaray finished the season in 8th place, it was also the worst season in the club's history. The team set a negative record of 16 defeats and for the first time they had a negative goal difference (−5) at the end of the season.

From the 2011/12 season, Fatih Terim took over the coaching position at Galatasaray for the third time . With Terim came the upheaval. On the last day of the season, away at the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadı, a 0-0 win against Fenerbahçe Istanbul and the team won their 18th championship at the end of the 2011/12 season. They reached the round of 16 with second place and met FC Schalke 04 there . Before the game against Schalke 04, Gala attracted a lot of attention in Europe with the transfers of Wesley Sneijder and Didier Drogba . The first leg in the Türk Telekom Arena ended with a 1-1 draw. In Gelsenkirchen , Fatih Terim's team won 3-2. Real Madrid faced the quarter-finals, with Galatasaray knocked out after a 3-0 first leg defeat in Madrid and a 3-2 win in the second leg. In the Turkish Cup, the team was surprisingly eliminated in the 5th qualifying round against the second division club 1461 Trabzon . After eleven years, Burak Yılmaz, a player from Galatasaray, managed to become top scorer.

Galatasaray started the 2013/14 season with the title defense of the Turkish Supercup. Drogba scored the winning goal against Fenerbahçe Istanbul in the final during extra time . Aurélien Chedjou , Bruma and Erman Kılıç came as newcomers , while the purchase options were drawn from Felipe Melo and Umut Bulut. Due to the foreign restrictions at the time, Johan Elmander and Nordin Amrabat were awarded to Norwich City and Málaga FC . On August 22, 2013 Fatih Terim was coach of Turkey and should coach the team for four international matches. A month later, Terim was fired from his post as head coach at Galatasaray. His successor was the Italian Roberto Mancini . In the UEFA Champions League, the yellow-reds reached the round of 16 after beating Juventus Turin 1-0 in the decisive group game . The game was canceled on December 10, 2013 because the pitch was unplayable after 31 minutes of play by referee Pedro Proença . The game continued the following day. In the round of 16, the team met Chelsea London . In the first leg in front of the home crowd, the game ended with a 1-1 draw. They lost the second leg 2-0. Gala defeated Eskişehirspor with a goal from Wesley Sneijder in the 70th minute of the game.

On June 11, 2014, Roberto Mancini was dismissed from the board after a mutual decision. He was succeeded by his compatriot Cesare Prandelli , who had previously been Italy's national coach . During the preparation for the new season players like the team captain Sabri Sarıoğlu , Emmanuel Eboué , Yiğit Gökoğlan , Engin Baytar and Sercan Yıldırım were excluded from the first team for an unlimited period. After only a few months in office, Prandelli was fired at Galatasaray. At the beginning of December, Hamza Hamzaoğlu, a former Galatasaray player , took over from Prandelli. Of the suspended players, Sarıoğlu was allowed to participate in the 1st team again. In the Champions League group stage (group opponents: Arsenal London , Borussia Dortmund and RSC Anderlecht ) the team finished bottom of the group with one point from six games. At the end of the season, the yellow-reds became champions for the 20th time. The 20th championship title also meant that the fourth championship star could be placed over the club's emblem. In the Turkish Cup, Galatasaray defeated Bursaspor 3-2 in the final , Burak Yılmaz scored all three goals .

Shortly before the start of the 2015/16 season, Galatasaray and Bursaspor met again in the Turkish Supercup at Osmanlı Stadyumu (Ankara). In this game, as in the cup final, the winner was Galatasaray Istanbul. The only goal of the game was scored by Yasin Öztekin . During the summer transfer period, Gala signed Lukas Podolski ( Arsenal FC ) and Kevin Großkreutz ( Borussia Dortmund ) among others . There were disagreements with the Großkreutz transfer. Galatasaray registered incomplete documents with FIFA on the last day of the transfer window . Due to this, Großkreutz was not granted a right to play, only from January 1, 2016, Großkreutz was allowed to participate in official games. On November 18, 2015, Galatasaray unexpectedly announced the split from head coach Hamzaoğlu. Mustafa Denizli was his successor . For Denizli it is the third term as head coach at Galatasaray. Großkreutz left Galatasaray after six months without a competitive game and returned to Germany for VfB Stuttgart . In the Champions League group stage, the team finished third behind Atlético Madrid and Benfica Lisbon . This qualified the Lions for the Europa League and met Lazio Rome . The first leg ended in a 1-1 draw in the Türk Telekom Arena. In Rome, Galatasaray had to admit defeat 3-1. After three months, Denizli resigned as head coach. As coach of the second team, Orhan Atik took over the first team for two interim games. On March 2, 2016, UEFA announced that it would ban Galatasaray from European competitions for one year. The reason for this was that the club violated financial fair play . After two games, Atik was replaced by Jan Olde Riekerink from the Netherlands .

After the end of the game between Gençlerbirliği Ankara and Galatasaray, on March 13, 2016, not far from the football scene, a bomb attack occurred in downtown Ankara in which Umut Bulut's father , Kemal Bulut, was on his way home from the May 19 stadium found was killed. On March 19, 2016, a terrorist attack occurred in downtown Istanbul , as a result of which the Istanbul derby between Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe had to be canceled on the following day due to acute terror warnings. Galatasaray ended the 2015/16 season in a disappointing 6th place. In the final of the Turkish Cup, the team defeated city rivals Fenerbahçe 1-0 with a goal from Lukas Podolski .

For the 2016/17 season, Olde Riekerink was also appointed head coach of Galatasaray Istanbul. The first competitive game of the season was the 15th achievement of the Supercup for Galatasaray . The 14-year-old Mustafa Kapı was substituted on in a friendly against Levski Sofia . Kapı was thus the youngest player to appear in a professional game for Galatasaray. On February 15, 2017, Galatasaray Istanbul announced the separation from Olde Riekerink. The team was at the time in the Süper Lig in 3rd place in the table and in the Turkish Cup Gala was eliminated in the round of 16 against Istanbul Başakşehir . On the same day, Igor Tudor became the new head coach and signed a contract there until May 31, 2018. Galatasaray paid Kardemir Karabükspor a transfer fee of 150,000 euros. Tudor is, after Tomislav Ivić , the second Croatian coach in the club's history. The 2016/17 season ended Galatasaray in 4th place.

The 2017/18 season began for the yellow-reds with the second qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League against Östersunds FK . After a 2-0 defeat in Sweden and a 1-1 draw in Istanbul, they were eliminated from the European Cup. Igor Tudor was sacked shortly before the end of the 2017/18 season. A few days after Tudor was released, Galatasaray Istanbul announced the return of Fatih Terim. In the Turkish Cup, the red and yellow were eliminated in the semi-finals against Akhisar Belediyespor . In the league, however, they were able to secure the 21st championship in the club's history with a 1-0 win against Göztepe Izmir on the last day of the match .

The season continued from June 12th. After the break, Galatasaray managed one win, three draws and lost four games in eight games. The yellow-reds took 6th place at the end of the season. The first game between these two teams was played on January 17, 1909, Galatasaray won 2-0. Fenerbahçe has more victories in the games between the two, Galatasaray, on the other hand, won 7-0 on February 12, 1911, 7-0 on Fenerbahçes grounds, which is considered an amateur game instead of a league game, since the Turkish Football Association was only founded in 1923 has been. No relevant reason is known for this historically unproven hostility, other than perhaps the fact that both teams are home to Istanbul . Otherwise, the tensions have no basis whatsoever: no religious one like the Old Firm , no political one like FC Barcelona and Real Madrid . In spite of everything, it remains a fact that the Turkish media and officials of the two clubs have contributed a lot to this.

Other rivals are Beşiktaş Istanbul , which sees itself in a rather special position, and Trabzonspor , which has had Fenerbahçe as a major opponent since the 1970s .

On May 13, 2013, after the Istanbul city derby between Fenerbahce and Galatasaray, a Fenerbahce fan was stabbed in downtown Istanbul. According to media reports, the perpetrators are supporters of arch rivals Galatasaray. The 19-year-old Fenerbahce fan died in hospital from his injuries.

Stages

Before 1964

In the first few years of the club's history, there was no stadium in Istanbul in which Galatasaray could have played its games. The first stadium, Taksim Stadium , opened in 1921. It was the first home for Galatasaray as well as Beşiktaş Istanbul and Fenerbahçe Istanbul . Galatasaray played there until 1939. In 1940 the stadium was demolished.

Ali Sami Yen Stadyumu (1964 to 2011)

After the time in the Taksim Stadium, Galatasaray planned to build an independent and at that time modern stadium. The then club president Ali Haydar Barşal bought a plot of land for the future stadium in Istanbul's Mecidiyeköy district . The groundbreaking ceremony followed on December 1, 1936 , until the opening of the Ali Sami Yen Stadium in 1964, Galatasaray played in the İnönü Stadı . On December 20, 1964, the stadium was opened with the game between Turkey and Bulgaria . There was a tragic accident during the game. At a sausage seller, the gas stove began to spark, so that the audience panicked. The affected grandstand collapsed and 80 people were injured. A spectator succumbed to his injuries a few days after the incident.

The stadium was named after the co-founder and first club president Ali Sami Yen . The stadium was not used for long football team games. The construction of the flyover next to the stadium and the lack of interest from the audience forced the club to close the gates in 1972. The football team returned to the Ali Sami Yen on December 22, 1980 in the league game against Altay İzmir .

Due to the persistent problems with the stadium lawn, it was decided at the end of the 1983/84 season that the stadium had to be stopped again. The next two seasons were spent the home games in Inönü . After two years of renovation and refurbishment , the stadium was ready for football matches.

The stadium had a capacity of 24,000 seats, but reached on June 7, 1987 in the league game against Eskişehirspor an audience of 39,000. It was the last day of the 1986/87 season and Galatasaray became Turkish football champions after 14 years without a title. To date, this is the highest-attendance game in the history of the stadium. The own fans also call the stadium Cehennem (hell)

After the soccer team moved to the Türk Telekom Arena , the stadium was demolished in May 2011. The association plans to build a 5-star hotel with 200 rooms on the vacant area.

Ataturk Olympic Stadium (2003 to 2004)

Due to renovation work in the Ali Sami Yen Stadium, Galatasaray played its home games in the Ataturk Olympic Stadium in the 2003/04 season. The stadium has a capacity of 76,092 seats, making it the largest stadium in Turkey. It is located west of Istanbul in İkitelli. Because of the poor arrival and departure, the club was criticized for this interim solution by many clubs. In the 2004/05 season, the red and yellow played their home games again in the Ali Sami Yen .

Galatasaray played its UEFA Champions League home games at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium in 2006/07 . Gala wanted to use the large capacity, as its own stadium with just over 20,000 seats was much smaller than the Olympic Stadium and therefore more support was to be expected. In addition, the club made more income from higher ticket sales.

Türk Telekom Stadyumu (since 2011)

Interior view of Türk Telekom Stadyumu

The Türk Telekom Stadyumu has been Galatasaray's new home stadium since the second half of the 2010/11 season. Construction of the new stadium began on December 14, 2007 and the opening was scheduled for January 15, 2011. Galatasaray Istanbul played in the opening game against Ajax Amsterdam . The stadium should be ready a year in advance, but the global economic crisis also hit this project, which is why the construction of the arena had to be stopped from March 2009 to October 2009. The stadium is one of the most modern in Turkey, with space for 52,650 spectators. Galatasaray Istanbul initially leased the stadium from Spor Genel Müdürlüğü, a department of the Ministry of Youth and Sports. Galatasaray has been the official owner of the stadium since March 2017.

The Turkish telecommunications company Türk Telekom acquired the right to name the stadium for 10 years, the actual name of the venue is Aslantepe .

The original (sponsor) name was "Türk Telekom Arena", but this name had to be changed by order of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan , as it "reminds of the arenas in ancient Rome and the word 'arena' is not Turkish".

Facilities

Galatasaray Museum

The Galatasaray Museum in Beyoğlu , Istanbul

The Galatasaray Museum was founded in 1905 by Ali Sami Yen . The museum was located in Kalamış ( Istanbul ) until May 15, 1919 . Ali Sami Yen feared after the First World War that all trophies, jerseys, photographs, documents and medals could be confiscated by the state at the time, so the items were placed in the Galatasaray High School . The Galatasaray Museum is the first sports museum of its kind to be opened in Turkey .

The museum houses around 3,000 trophies and photographs of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk and other important statesmen from Turkey and Europe. Visitors will also find weapons and swords from the First World War: around 200 students from the Galatasaray High School took part in the war at that time, and the majority of them were killed.

Youth facilities

Galatasaray has one of the most successful youth institutions in Turkey. The Gündüz Kılıç Youth Facilities in Florya is the center of the department. The aim is to develop footballers who are loyal to the traditions of Galatasaray, are creative, have strategic understanding, treat their opponents and supporters with respect, have an exemplary personality and adhere to the principles of fair play. In addition, many of Turkey's important players come from Galatasaray's youth such as: Okan Buruk , Bülent Korkmaz , Arda Turan and Tugay Kerimoğlu . The Galatasaray youth team is also the record champions of the youth league with six championships. Galatasaray has 65 youth academies in Turkey. Abroad, one each in Baku , Antwerp , Tehran , Baghdad , Kyrenia ( Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus ) and Moscow .

Part of the training area

Florya Metin Oktay Tesisleri

The training ground of Galatasaray das Florya Metin Oktay Tesisleri was named after the player Metin Oktay . He was the best goalscorer in the club's history before Hakan Şükür . Oktay died in 1991 after a car accident, which is why the training ground was named after him. Florya (Istanbul) is the district where the plant is located. The size of the area is 80 hectares, there is the club house, 4 soccer fields, a separate area for the soccer youth, soccer boarding school and sports halls for the basketball and volleyball department. One of the football fields was named after the late coach Jupp Derwall .

Galatasaray TV

Galatasaray TV GS TV for short is the association's own television station. On January 15, 2007, it went on air with the help of Doğan Yayın Holding . It is broadcast around the clock. The program includes the latest news from the club and the world of football, live images of team training, the broadcast of football classics from past years, reports and portraits. The games of the second team will be broadcast live. The games of the A-team in the Süper Lig will not be broadcast live, but the game will be reported live. On May 28, 2009, the contract with Doğan Yayın Holding was terminated, from then on GS TV could be received on Digiturk until July 18, 2019 .

Since then, the club's own station has continued to be available online (via livestream ).

Galatasaray Island

The Galatasaray Island or Kuruçeşme Island is an island that is located in the Bosphorus . The island was acquired in 1957 by the then Galatasaray President Sadık Giz and made available for club members and the water polo team until 1968. The island was renovated from 2002 to 2007. The island had three restaurants, a night club, a bar and an Olympic-sized swimming pool .

On May 28, 2017, the localities on the island were demolished by the city administration.
