Lorik Cana [ lɔɾik ʦɑ̟nɑ̟ ] (born July 27, 1983 in Pristina , SFR Yugoslavia , today Kosovo ) is a former Albanian football player . In addition to Albanian citizenship, Cana also has French citizenship.
As a child, Cana and his family left Kosovo , which was threatened by civil war, and went to Switzerland . His father Agim Cana , a former junior international Yugoslavia, had accepted an offer from a Swiss second division team.
Career
In the club
As a teenager, the defensive midfielder joined FC Lausanne-Sport in 1997 . As a 16-year-old, Lorik had an offer from Arsenal FC that he had to decline due to visa problems. An offer from Paris Saint-Germain followed in 2000 , which he accepted. For the 2002/03 season he moved up from the youth in the second team of the capital city.
After one season, Cana rose to the PSG first team . At the age of 20 he was voted "Albania's Soccer Player of the Year 2003". In 2004 he also received this award. In the summer of 2005, Cana moved to Olympique Marseille after falling out of favor with the PSG board and with then coach Laurent Fournier . There he rose to become captain . He scored his first goal for Olympique Marseille against his old club Paris Saint-Germain.
For the 2009/10 season, Cana moved to the Premier League for AFC Sunderland for just under 5.5 million euros . During the 2010 summer break, Cana moved to Galatasaray Istanbul for four years . The transfer fee was six million pounds . After just one season, Cana left Galatasaray and moved to Lazio Rome in the Italian Serie A for the 2011/12 season .
After four years with the Romans, he moved back to France for FC Nantes , where he signed a one-year contract. For the coming season, he has not extended his expiring contract.
In the national team
Shortly after his debut for PSG , he was appointed to the Albanian national team for the first time . He played his first international match against Switzerland , where he had lived for a long time.
In the Albanian national team he is a record player with over 90 appearances. He scored a goal in a friendly against Azerbaijan .
At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was included as captain in the Albanian squad . In the opening game against Switzerland he was sent off after a deliberate handball in the 36th minute of the game. At this point, Albania was 1-0 down and could not change the result after being outnumbered. After being suspended in the second game, he was used as a substitute in the final minutes of the last game against Romania. Although Albania won this game, the country was eliminated as one of the two worst third party. After the tournament he announced his retirement from the national team.
